Going for HSG..any suggestions?

Going to take my HSG in the next couple weeks after my day 3 blood work..any suggestions or tips?

Take some advil or something before hand.

Take a deep breath before.

I had a lot of cramping and discomfort with mine but I think my reaction was a little worse than most people. If you're OK with PAPS this should be very similar.

Have the tech make sure the equipment works before they start the process.... LOL This was my nightmare procedure. They got everything started and then the imager wouldnt work. Here I am in the stirrups with my whole glory exposed pointed right at the door. I was praying so hard that day that no one came through the door. The procedure itself was not a huge deal just pretty uncomfortable. The Doc did a very good job and was very good at explaining the whole thing as he was going. I had mild spotting and cramping for about an hour but after that I was back to normal. The stuff they use is like syrup so its sticky and uncomfortable and I had to go to work immediately after. I wish I had had time to shower after.

Bring your own pad/panty liner

anything you bring will be way better than what they give you. Mine wasn't bad at all. I was nervous for nothing. Mine didn't hurt at all just felt a little pressure when they injected the dye. Once the doctor is there it only takes 5-10 minutes. My radiologist told me my results right away. My nurse said that some do some don't it just depends on the doctor. Good luck!

Take all of the recommended drugs ahead of time, as a precaution.

Know that your husband probably won't be able to go back with you (because of the dye) and plan accordingly.

I'm also getting an HSG in the next couple of weeks, so I'm glad I found this post. I made the mistake of calling my mother-in-law who is a radiology tech to ask if she's ever done one on a patient. She freaked me out so I'm glad everyone is saying it's just uncomfortable. I plan on taking a full dose of advil before I go in.

Do you all recommend taking someone with you?

Everyone's experience is different, but mine was pretty painless and actually interesting to watch the dye move. Take ibuprofen before you go (I kind of doubt I actually needed it, but everyone including the docs say to take it so it probably helps.) I did not have and did not need anyone with me to drive home. My only regret: not taking my own pantyliner/pad. I had to use the hospital-provided one. I believe I've described wearing one of those as feeling as if I had a pool noodle in my pants. Seriously the longest, fattest, lumpiest, most uncomfortable thing I've ever had near my crotch

It got the job done, but one of my own would have been much better! Good luck!

If things do get uncomfortable, just breathe. Close your eyes and breathe. The procedure only takes a few moments so it will be over in no time. Oh, and bring a pad with you for afterwards. You'll might have a little leakage and spotting.

I wasn't prepared for the room set up and it scared me much more than it should have. I had mine done at a surgery center and I started panicking when they gave me a bracelet with my name and DOB (because why the hell would I need that unless there was a chance I would become completely incapacitated?!). It was just normal procedure but then the nurse told me I was having the HSG in the operating room (WHAT?!) which was worrisome because it sounded like it wasn't going to be a big deal and I was used to a regular set up with the table and stirrups. After all this the nurse took my blood pressure and heart rate and she was like "Wow, your BP is kind of high and your heart is racing. Are you nervous?" YOU THINK?!

Then they took me back to the operating room and it was frightening. Huge overhead lights, big machines, and the stirrups had straps so they strapped my legs down.

But once they did the actual procedure it wasn't bad at all. The worst part was the speculum. It was pretty neat to see my ute on the x-ray machine. I watched the dye spill out of my tubes and then they took all the tools out of me (I don't know what was up there but I swear they took like, 6 things out) and I was free to go.

They gave me a pull-up diaper so I definitely recommend bringing your own pads.

Do NOT look at the instrument table when you walk in the room. Keep your eyes lowered. I looked, and it made me very unhappy.

Take the recommended medicine before you go. I took two Tylenol and I didn't feel much pain, just pressure. If they'll let you take ibuprofen that's better, but I wasn't allowed to because I was on Clomid.

Take the recommended meds beforehand, take some advil or something beforehand too. Bring a pad for after, just in case.

It took all of ten minutes or so for me and I got my results on the spot. My husband was at work and there wasn't a need for him to be there, in my opinion. I was okay to drive home after.

I go in for mine in a couple of weeks. I just talked with the nurse last night about instructions, and I have to POAS the day before (what a joke!) and take 400 mg of ibuprofen an hour before the procedure. I am having my husband go with me just because I have to go to a hospital about an hour's drive from our house for it, and don't want to have to drive if there is bad news. Plus, I'll get to have a day off with him.

@erinfrank8 - The hospital I had mine done at required that someone come with me to drive me home. I could have driven home by myself (I only live 5-10 minutes from the hospital). The nurse did say that some women feel faint afterward, so that is most likely why they required it for me.

I had mine done at the outpatient center in the hospital about 2 minutes from my house. Take ibprofen about an hour before the procedure. First thing they asked me was if I had someone to drive me home. Which I didn't...I didn't know they wanted someone to. They were fine with me driving home, but they asked me a couple of times how I felt afterwards. She said that some people feel faint afterwards as well. It didn't feel that bad...just a little bit of pressure. It hurt the most when she wanted me to roll to the sides.

the left one was so open all the dye kept going in there vs evenly flowing so they couldn't give me a definite answer on the right but my doctor was the one who did it an she said I shouldn't worry because you only need one just incase..The way she described it was like there's a fork in a river and one if flowing much faster that one will be more water going threw it so the dye didn't get a chance to fully go on the other..I had to try going on my side too but the dye had alot of spillage
