Pregnant after a Loss

Incompetent cervix risk after d&cs

Hey all,
I had my NT scan today. All is great, thank goodness. However, when I spoke to my dr she added a sono to my 16wk bloodwork to measure my cervix. She said after having two d&cs I am at increased risk for an incompetent cervix. Yikes! Does anyone know what the chances are?? Anyone had a successful delivery after multiple d&cs? Of course, I froze and didn't ask the dr ANYTHING!! Any info will help! Thanks all!

Re: Incompetent cervix risk after d&cs

  • I have been monitored for this with each pregnancy as well, bc I have had multiple D&C's as well as a LEEP before getting pregnant. It is just a precaution. I was having my cervix measured every 2 weeks until 24 weeks and for me personally, never had any issues.

  • I've had multiple d and c's as well. This is the first I have heard of this but will definitely be asking at my next appointment. Thanks for bringing this up.
  • I've had 2 d&c's and I had to have an emergency stitch placed at 25 weeks due to funneling of the cervix and super short cervical legnth. My doc said my cervical incompantance COULD be from my multiple d&c's because they actually dialate your cervix and the cervix isn't dialating on it's own, so it could make it weak. Good luck!

  • @who_dat_grl‌ I am so sorry that happened to you. How scary. I have had three d and c's and this is the first I am hearing of this. I'm currently 15 weeks. How did they check your cervical length? Was it just via ultrasound? I'm very nervous about this. My next appointment isn't for a couple of weeks.
  • I've had 2 D&Cs, as well as a hysteroscopy.  My OB has never expressed concern about my cervix, and it has been plenty long each time they've checked it via ultrasound.  At 32+ weeks I am pretty confident it's going to last.

    Hey @jess123456‌
I did a little research and found some info that said this finding is not accurate. As a result, some drs do not take any extra precautions w a patient who has had d&cs. There also is a lot out there indicating d&c can cause incompetent cervix though so def mention to your ob. Just another thing we get to worry about!
  • I've had 3 D&Cs so when I went to the MFM for my NT we had a very similar conversation. I went for bi-weekly checks up until 24 weeks. My cervix was always in tip top shape! I honestly didn't mind the extra care, it was nice to see LO on a regular basis especially for a PgALer

  • I had one D&C and my doc had me come at 16 weeks (last week actually) to check cervical length. She didn't say anything to me about heightened risk of incompetent cervix due to the D&C, but I know other friends of mine who were pregnant didn't have the sono at 16 weeks, just the A/S at 20. So I suppose there is something there. Oh, and my cervix was lovely and long, apparently!
