Eating regression?!?!

My LO is 5 months old and the last week he is eating a lot less than he used to. He usually takes between 20oz-24oz a day but the last week I have battled to get him to take even 15oz. He is happy, not crabby. Peeing and pooping. Not peeing as much but still wet diapers. What is going on? Normal? We are on day 7 of this. He is on breast milk only in a bottle. He only drinks 2oz at a time now. Start panicking? Or leave it for a couple days and see if he bounces back?

Re: Eating regression?!?!

  • Watching this thread as we're having the same issue, also at 5 months.

  • We had same issue. It ended up being reflux.
  • He does have reflux but it has been managed with meds, he doesn't seem to be in pain when eating.
  • We are having a similar problem. 5 1/2 months. I don't know what's going on either but LO is still happy.

  • I thought it could be distraction too, I tried feeding him in different rooms and letting different ppl feed him. Nothing makes a difference. I tried spacing the bottles out more but he still takes the same amount. Wondering if it's just a phase. Hard thing is he is happy and seems satisfied. It's wierd!
  • My LO is 5 1/2 months & we had something similar this past week. I couldn't tell you the difference in ounces since I BF, but I def noticed she wasn't emptying me, particularly in the morning when I really want her to. It only lasted a few days, but I'm kinda just thinking her weight gain is probably slowing down a little now that she has doubled her birth weight, so maybe there are times where she doesn't need as much. That said though, if I knew she was only taking 2 oz & it lasted so long, I'd prob call the pedi just to be sure.
  • @carlesearle Try switching to a new brand of bottle. Our LO started this exact same thing at 5mos. He would tongue the bottle out after half an ounce and refuse any more. (Still acted normal though unless I tried to get him to drink more). We were using the medela brand but the nipples would collapse. Now we use playtex ventaire; they don't collapse. I always offer at least 6 oz now (LO use to eat at most 4-5). He will still graze on an ounce or two every half hour sometimes, but he's willing to take much more overall, frequently all 6. He also drinks the most at night.

FYI we called the pedi and they suggested it could also be teething .

  • I was just reading on the wonder week app that one of the "side effects" of the leap they start around 23 weeks is eating less. Could be related...

  • Alex has been doing this a bit recently too. I think it might be due to teething. We thought she was working on her bottom two, turns out we can feel the bottom two, top two, and a molar on one side just below the gums. YIKES! Could your LO be teething too?

  • I also thought it could be teething, I haven't seen or felt any. @ScarlettV‌ we have tried most of the bottles on the market and gone up 2 sizes in nipples. We took him to a different Pediatrition to see if they could have any insight and she suggested occupational therapy and ultra sounds. Seems very dramatic to me. Going to see his regular Pediatrition later this week. Hope this phase ends soon it's stressful
  • @TShea721‌ yup sorry i meant up in flow.
  • We had this issue at 3 months where his daily intake cut in half for almost a week, saw the pediatrician and he said it was probably a non growth spell. The body was taking a break from growing and didn't need as many oz. Bounced back a day after the Dr visit
