Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Concerned but can it be normal?

My nearly 10 month old only babbles the sounds baba and the m sound, but not mama. He has made the da sound, but not dada. He also just started to wave, but will not do so on command. He does "so big" and plays peak-a-Bo, he's social, and smiles, and laughs when we tickle him. He's very needy and wants lots of attention and to be in my arms. He was a very colicky baby (5.5 months long). Should I be concerned or is this normal?

  • he sounds normal to me! Lots of separation anxiety around 10 months I found (that would explain the needy and wanting to be in your arms)  The wonder weeks app explains it all quite nicely.

  • The m sound is harder and lots of kids say ba and da long before m words.  I think you need to look at their overall progress.  Doing or not doing one thing doesn't mean a problem.  My 11 month old doesn't wave.  Luckily I have a 4 year old to compare to because this baby is EXACTLY like him.  He didn't wave until he was over a year old and was lazy as all hell with holding a sippy (now little brother is the same way lol).  Yours sounds really normal so I wouldn't worry.  You'll have time to chat about your concerns at his 1 year check up.
