Counting contractions with anterior placenta

So,my OB told me at my 24 week appt to start paying attention to movement and contractions. I have googled it, and I still don't get it. I know I can ask her at my next appt, but since I am a FTM, I worry.
I don't feel anything when I put my finger on my belly. Maybe I am doing it incorrectly. I just worry I wouldn't be able to feel them because of the placenta placement.
Also, could a contraction ever feel like a kick with an anterior placenta?

Re: Counting contractions with anterior placenta

  • I don't know why they would have you count contractions this early. And real contractions hurt. Bh contractions are just uncomfortable. Unless they were concerned about preterm labor?

  • I don't know why. I'm high risk because I am 38, but the pregnancy has been pretty awesome.

  • You are going to feel a contraction, doesn't matter where your placenta is.

Not sure why they want you counting kicks this early.

I had an anterior placenta the first time and felt real hard kicks at 18 weeks. I have an anterior placenta this time but I also have a partial previa. Anyway, I started feeling movement at 15 weeks. I'm 26 weeks now and feel kicks and movement all over. I can see my belly morph at times when the baby moves around.

I haven't been asked to count kicks.

I'm pretty sure anterior placenta doesn't matter as far as contractions go. I put the palm of my hand at the very bottom of my belly and feel/poke. When your uterus contracts, it'll feel rock hard there. Otherwise it should be somewhat pliable. It won't feel like a kick, it's a slower tightening and releasing of the muscles there.

We just talked about doing movement counts at least once a day at my 28 week appointment. My midwives said it doesn't have to be official, just try to pay enough attention to notice movement at some point during the day.
  • Thanks. I do feel a lot of movement, and I have also seen my belly morph. I just didn't know if those kicks could be contractions?

  • I have two anterior placentas this pregnancy and have been having a ton of Braxton Hicks contractions. Trust me, you'll know when you're having a contraction. You're whole stomach area tightens and gets really hard.

  • Trust us, you'll know when you are having contractions. They almost feel like a hug from the back around to the front last a minute than releases. I have an anterior placenta too, you will still feel them :)

  • FTM here, but once you have felt both a BH Contraction and kicks it is easy to tell the difference. The contractions are more tightening all over. Plus, while the kicks are noticeable and a little weird feeling at times (seriously, what is she doing in there?), the contractions I would classify as more uncomfortable. So try to to stress, like everyone said, you will know when you have a contraction even as a FTM.

  • With my first, I didn't actually realize I was having BH until I was having an NST and then I was like "oh THAT is why my stomach is all hard". It was a duh moment. With BH it really is like your whole stomach hardens and it's uncomfortable, but doesn't hurt. When I was further along, and I would get BH it felt like I was having trouble breathing.
