Talk to me about monitors

...or link me to a thread where we talked about them before. Now that we all have outside babies I figure FTMs will have more of an opinion of what they do and don't like :)

Anyways, I never got one before and I'm thinking it would be useful now, when I'm starting to think about putting him in his crib for naps. His crib is in our bedroom right now, so we haven't needed it for night, but he will have his own room in a few months when our lease is up at our apartment.

Re: Talk to me about monitors

  • We have a Motorola video monitor and I love it. It also displays the temp, which has been helpful. It has a lullaby feature so I can turn music on in her room through the monitor in mine. It also has an alarm that I set to wake up to check on her. The picture is very clear and the sound is clear, as well. There are colored lights on the top that show how much noise she is making (by lighting up different lights, different colors, etc).

@TyrannosaurusLex‌ which angelcare? Is there more than one kind? Is it video? I don't think I want video but I'm not really opposed

  • If you're just looking for an audio monitor, I like our Sony Baby Call. It's simple and pretty cheap but gets the job done. I use it when my kiddos fall asleep somewhere other than the crib and I need to be in another room.

For video monitors, we're currently using a Summer Infant Slim and Secure. It's been okay, really helpful to see what baby is up to, especially once baby is older. We bought a Motorola monitor a couple months ago because we needed two monitors and more range. I've heard great things about them but don't have any personal experience with it yey.

  • I have the Motorola one that PPs have linked to.  I usually turn the video part off when I'm sleeping but will turn it on again if he cries so I can see what's up.  I don't think the temperature part is correct on mine though.
  • Found an angelcare on CL for $30. Sweet! Thanks y'all!

  • We the Motorola too! I really like it. The only thing I've noticed is when it's on, it slows the wireless internet down big time. Anyone else have a similar expierence?

This for us too. And @djtippietoes the temp is off on ours too....but I think it's because of the wall we have it mounted on, and I think the sensor is on that part of the monitor. Since LO's room gets the sunrise, the sun heats up that side of the house, and supposedly LOs room can get as warm as 30 deg C (definitely doesn't, 24 is the warmest it's actually gotten, i checked with another thermometer after seeing this).

We had the basic one for both boys and looooove it. Awesome peace of mind and it has kick ass range. We regularly go over to the neighbors to sit by their fire and it still works! The temp thing is cool too.
  • @rosiepeare @stephcammie511 yup, ours runs warm too.  Freaked me out at first but then I realized there was no way that it was 80 degrees in his room!
  • We have a cheap-o audio only one: https://www.amazon.com/NTM-910YIC-Sony-Baby-Nursery-Monitor/dp/B000S35QLC/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1400592666&sr=8-12&keywords=baby+monitor

Used it for #1 and it was fine. It has a great range, me/LO1 can go outside and play in the backyard while LO2 is napping.

This is not meant to be snarky, but I'm truly curious about the appeal of a thermostat on the montior? Are the different rooms in people's homes that different in temperature?  I don't get it.

For us, yes temps can be different. We have baseboard heat so some rooms (depending on how big they are) the temps vary. Also If we're downstairs and shes upstairs, it's hard to judge temps because upstairs is always warmer. Also when we put the a/c in (we have window units), she won't have one in the nursery (when we move her there) so it'll be nice to see the temp in her room so I don't worry that she's getting too hot.

  • Interesting. At the house we grew up in the upstairs is usually about 5-10degrees (F) different, hotter in summer and colder in winter too.  I guess I don't think of that as a huge difference though.

FWIW I never even realized that was an option until this thread. I apparently failed at monitor research lol.

Another vote for Motorola. We have a camera in each kid's room and it scans back and forth. Our kid rooms are over the garage so there can be a pretty big temp difference, so I use the temp feature a lot.
