I really want to be able to stay home with my baby, but I need to supplement my husband's income. Does anyone here have a recommendation for a job that you can do from home? There are so many scams out there!
Not sure if this would appeal to you, but I know a SAHM who does a call-center type job at home in the evenings when her husband is home to watch the kids.
If you are talented with arts and crafts I know a few moms who have Etsy shops. This won't get you tons of income but maybe will supplement a bit. Also some have carried over permanent jobs to contract basis. My sister is a programmer and does some projects for her old firm. She works about 10 hours a week, all during naps or at night (twin 2 year olds and two older kids). A friend is a graphic artist and also does as hoc projects - no more than 10-15 hours a week at nights.
Unless you start a business of some sort(or do something like sell cosmetics), most stay at home opportunities come up once you have a relationship with the employer. Sometimes very small businesses might offer teleworking but it's rare.
A handful of SAHMs in my neighborhood got licensed as in-home providers without intending to be full time, at capacity in-home daycare providers. They advertise themselves as "drop in" or back up daycares and charge the going back up daycare rate for our area - $100/day. They also have a lower hourly rate for regular clients who just need a few hours or one day a week. Getting licensed gave them a level of legitimacy to charge the going rate and also gives parents some reassurance to actually use their services.
One lady runs a part time preschool in-home at a major discount compared to the other cooperative, part time preschool options in our area - she doesn't want to work 5 days a week, used to be a teacher, and wants to stay engaged in her trade, so this seems to be the comprise she pieced together for herself. It seems like a nice little set up - I've heard good reviews of her program.
