What do you do for LO's dry skin?

I know most babies have dry skin in the early weeks. DD has it mostly on her hands and feet. I got a few different types of lotion from my shower and so far I've just been using Aveeno baby unscented lotion. I also got some of the regular Johnson & Johnson stuff, and i have sample sizes of a few others. I know this isn't from over bathing as we are only giving her a bath every 3 days.

So before I go out and buy a whole bunch of other lotions that may or may not work, what have other moms had success with?

Re: What do you do for LO's dry skin?

  • I use the Johnson and Johnson bedtime lotion when I put her jammies on at night, seems to help with her skin and relax her.

  • @LeeLee86 that makes sense. DD is 2 weeks 1 day. I have coconut oil too that I've been using for her bum, so that's a good idea. Is there any risk if I use that and then she puts her hands in her mouth? I guess no more so than the lotion, right?

  • I think it's way better and I love it for the bum. I actually use cold pressed organic coconut oil and use it for everything (even for cooking) so I'm not nervous about her putting it in her mouth. But honestly I'm more scared to cut her nails so she's been in mittens since birth lol.

  • Coconut oil. He noms on his hands so he can eat it with no worries. But I only put it on when he's dry/peeling. I also use it on his bum daily.

I don't put anything on after baths.
  • My Pedi suggested Aquaphor today.

My Ped told me to just leave it until 3 weeks. The entire first layer of their skin has to come off and she said it won't help to put lotions on until it's all off. It's only on my DDs hands and feet too she's 2.5wks now. I'm going to use coconut oil on her instead of lotion. What you have should be fine once it's all fallen off

Our pedi with DD1 told us the same thing. We didn't use anything and it cleared up on its own.

I was told that using lotions can actually make it worse initially since the skin is supposed to be peeling. I tried everything with DS1 and nothing made any difference except time. With this LO I'm just letting it peel and not worrying about it.

  • My LO had it on her hands, feet, and stomach. I just put lotion on her twice a day. It didn't help much, only temporarily, but today at 2 weeks 1 day I noticed it is a lot better than it was.

This! I've also heard that putting a little breastmilk on the driest areas can help.

Just coconut oil or I've used my mother love nipple cream on his little hands and feet, just a dab :)

My ped said no lotions, just baby oil. Breastmilk also works.

  • Coconut oil or breast milk. I use eucerin on my older dds dry skin.
  • I never heard of using coconut oil for baby's skin. It sounds like this is a pretty common recommendation?
