breast milk question-please help

I stored about 3 oz. Of milk in the fridge so dh could bottle feed LO next time she got hungry. So I went to warm it up in the microwave (I know that is a big no no but I was desperate) and ended up making it too hot to feed to her comfortably so I ended up just giving her my breast instead. Is it OK to leave it out to go to room temperature and then feed to her later or is it safe to put back in the fridge? If it's safe to restore in the fridge what is a good way to heat it up next time? I know ways to heat up frozen milk but not refrigerated milk... I really don't want to waste it because it's a pretty solid bottle.

  • So I'm guessing just toss the milk this time and call it a loss?

If you have a keurig you can run a mug full of just water and put the BM in that.

  • There's a 5/5/5 rule with breastfeeding. It can be stored 5 hours at room temp, 5 days in the fridge, 5 months in the freezer. Up to a year in a deep freezer. Once milk is thawed you shouldn't refreeze it. I breastfed DS1 until he was 20 months old. I found it easy to just run the milk under hot tap water or sit it in hot tap. Thaws in a couple of mins.

The only way to thaw frozen BM is to place it in the fridge and let it thaw on it's own. We run our cooled BM under very hot water, long enough to add the fat all the way back in. She's never refused it.

With DD we always warmed up refrigerated bm in a bowl of hot water too. We were able to do this with frozen bm as well (it obviously just took longer!)

  • I use the drop ins and so far putting in a hot cup of water and letting it sit for a minute or so has been working great. Thanks for the help!
