Need gift idea for temp

We had a recent masters grad interning (unpaid) at my work since July. He's been looking for a full time job and was offered a paid position to cover for me while I was on maternity leave. Now that I'm back, he's leaving since I work in govt and there's only money for one person.

He did a FANTASTIC job while I was out which allowed me to completely unplug and savor time w baby. My dept is very busy and he just handled everything so well. I'm feel sick, I wish we had a position to offer him but we don't.

I would like to give him a thank you gift. Any ideas? I'm willing to spend up to $100 (would love to do more but that's my budget). Part of me thinks cash would be good but I don't think that's much of a "gesture" KWIM?

He's late 20s and newly married. All ideas appreciated!
