Reflux Symptom?

We have a doctors appointment scheduled for later today, but I wanted to see if any mamas with reflux experience can give advice. LO just turned a month old and will be 5 weeks on Thursday. He's EBF and spits up a lot. This weekend it's become more forceful and projectile but he's still according to kellymom a "happy spitter". Spitting up/vomiting doesn't bother him but gas. Holy cow we fight gas all day long. I've cut out dairy and seem improvement already, but what really gets me is what he does when he's sleeping. He makes gurgling, choking, and gagging sounds after I feed and he's asleep and I put him back down. It scares me to death and I jump up to check on him and hes usually fine. Am I right to take him in or am I being too paranoid since he doesn't seem bothered by anything but gas? Sorry for length and no paragraphs... I'm on mobile.

  • A dr visit certainly doesn't hurt. I don't know what they will say. Sounds like he has reflux to me but if it's not bothering him they likely won't do any meds. Sorry your LO is uncomfortable. DD struggles with gas all day long too. Suuuucccckkkss. Looking forward to our pedi appt tnrw as well.

  • My LO was diagnosed with GERD last week. Sounds like your LO may have something similar, although my son was not a happy spitter. His case could be mild though, good call going to the doctor. My son is now on Zantac and isn't spitting up as much and isn't in as much pain, still gassy though.

Do you hold him upright for 30 mins after feeding? DD has reflux and doing that makes a big difference.

ETA but it sucks having to add 30 mins to each feeding time!

  • I do hold him upright and he usually spits up massively as soon as I sit him up. If he doesn't spit up then he will as soon as I change positions again, like to change his diaper. Thanks for the sympathy and advice ladies!

It sucks to see your baby bothered and in pain without being able to do much other than comfort him. :(

I will update with what the doctor says and recommends in case that will help anyone else out!

  • I've been wondering the same thing for my little one. She started projectile vomiting at least once a day and was super gassy all day. I've cut out dairy as well and that made a big difference! Other than that I've been keeping her in a position with belly bellow her head while feeding and that seems to help a bit bringing the burps out with just a burp and no spit up.
I try to keep her upright after feedings too.
Keep us updated on what the doc says, I've been wondering about this!
  • We addressed DD's issue with gas/reflux at her 2 month appointment. In her case she was miserable between feeds whether stuff was coming up or not. She didn't normally spit up a lot of fluid (sometimes yes but not as a rule) but she would gulp or cough and then swallow it back down.

The doctor prescribed her zantac b/c of how miserable she was, otherwise she would have just suggested smaller feedings, more burping, and holding her upright after feedings.

  • DS is starting Zantac today. He has the spitting up and choking it back down all the time which wakes him up and makes him really uncomfortable. Doc said it would take two weeks to see if it was working.

  • Definitely reflux. We're starting Zantac and going from there! Doctor said technically all babies spit up so they all have reflux... It's just a matter of how bad it is- he seemed like he didn't believe me until I told him about the projectile spit up and gagging/choking (which he got to witness) and DS hasn't gained weight. Here's hoping it helps and my sweet boy will feel better and start getting chunky.

  • LO is three weeks tomorrow and we're experiencing all of the silent reflux symptoms. We had a choking scare last week and ever since things are worsening. He cannot stay asleep after a feed because the reflux wakes him. Add a growth spurt to that and I'm ready to cry. The pediatrician dismissed the choking scare as an isolated incident, so I'm afraid they're going to do the same thing when I bring up silent reflux.
  • Just a heads up- DS started refluxing pretty early. It sounded like he had a cough bc he was choking so badly. The Zantac took a full week to fully work. I noticed a difference after about 48 hrs, but DS was significantly better by day 7. Don't get discouraged if you don't see results right away.

We started it Friday and could tell a difference within 24 hours. He's still spitting up but it's actually coming up, he's not choking on it anymore. Hope your LO gets relief as quickly!
