Pregnant after a Loss

Prenatal Care After a Stillbirth ?

I lost my daughter to an umbilical cord accident at 37 weeks last November. Very healthy pregnancy With no indication anything was amiss. I'm pregnant again and have my first doctors appt tomorrow. I'll be seeing my perinatologist at 10 weeks. What plan of action should I ask for to ensure this does not happen again? I realize more monitoring but what exactly and how often ? I want to induce before 37 weeks but I have a feeling I'll get major push back...

  • @mrsgerman‌ pretty much hit the nail on the head. Every pregnancy is going to be handled differently. Most of my testing was done prior to conceiving again, but I have had a lot of extra monitoring due to to my loss being attributed to a suspected rapid onset pre-E. I've had and will continue to have growth scans every 4 weeks since 21 weeks and start weekly NST next week. As for early induction, I would talk to and listen to your doctors about your concerns. I know my doctors are planning to early unless medically indicated (high BP, protein in urine, baby in distress, etc) and after talking about the risk of early induction I am comfortable with that given all the monitoring I will have. PgAL is hard and having a supportive team including doctors you trust is critical. Congratulations and wishing you a very H&H 9 months!

  • Congratulations on being pregnant again! I hope you can find joy in your new pregnancy instead of just fear. It can be so hard!

You've already gotten great responses here, but I'll just echo the fact that you should be asking for non-stress tests a couple times a week before the end. My stillbirth was due to liver issues, so I ask my doctors to draw my blood and do liver function tests about every month. They are pretty good about doing whatever I ask! Just make sure you tell your doctors whatever they can to do help you and your baby.

Unfortunately I think you're right that your doctors will be hesitant to induce you before 37 weeks. I feel just like you and I am completely not interested in sitting around waiting for something to go wrong during the last few weeks of pregnancy. Too much anxiety for me! My regular OB is ok with my request but the MFM says no. He feels it is best for the baby to come when she s ready. He also explained that induction can take a really long time at that stage, which can lead to complications. I think we will just wait until closer to the end and see what the situation is. I hope you find that doctors that you are comfortable with - they need to balance the medical needs and your mental/emotional needs as well!

  • First of all, I am so sorry for your loss.  I also lost my daughter at 30 weeks last April to a cord accident.

This time, my doctor is planning to induce around 37 weeks and I will have ultrasounds at 28 and 34 weeks.  I had my anatomy scan today and the doctor spent extra time showing us where the cord is inserted in the placenta and the belly, and where it is in relation to the baby.  It was nice to see that our concerns were being addressed.

Congrats on your new pregnancy and I am wishing you a h&h 9 months!
