Breastfeeding

Burping....

I was told breastfed babies do not as much as bottle fed since they do not get as much air. Now my daughter doesn't spit up but I can rarely get her to burp after a sfeed. How long is too long of trying to get her to Burp before giving up. My husband seems to think that I try for too long

I have the same problem. I can go for 20 minutes to get her to burp with nothing. Then she gets gas and screams......

  • 3 weeks old and I try for 5-10 depending how.long she ate i try a little longer. When she does burp she will burp right when I lift her up. If not she doesnt burp at all.

I just didnt know if I should be trying longer .

  • I found that when I would try burping my LO it doesn't happen and I just feel like I'm banging out a tune on his back. But I always get quick results if I bounce him gently in my arms. Sometimes I bounce & pat his back if he gets super fussy or is screaming.

I found I had a more difficult time getting burps out of my guy when he was that little doing the traditional position of baby over the shoulder and patting. Sometimes just switching positions would do the trick (leg pumps/bicycles first and then burps). If that didn't work, I would rub his back firmly and slowly from his lower back to his shoulders a couple of times and then pat. That almost always got the burps out. If it didn't, I usually stopped trying after 3-5 mins. It gets easier as they get older. GL!
  • It sometimes took us a solid 5 minutes but she needed to be burped because she was sooo miserable unless I did it. If she was fussy sometimes it was because she needed a burp. Go for as long as you want, it won't hurt to try longer.

  • My LO burped maybe 50% of the time. I would try for 5 minutes either over the shoulder or sitting up and holding her under her chin. If she didn't burp in the 5 minutes she usually didn't burp at all that feeding. Sometimes changing positions from one to another would do it for her too. If she's not extremely uncomfortable then I wouldn't worry about it.
  • She doesnt seem uncomfortable if she dOesnt burp.

I'm sure it contributes to LOs terrible gas pains :(

  • I would try for a few minutes at that age and then just go with it. She also got hangry if I tried for too long. She liked being on the boob. Why did I even use past tense?

My ped kind of pushed burping and recommended sitting her on the Boppy/my lap with my hand under her armpits, raising her arms a little and then patting her back. She said moving the arms up and down can help get any air bubbles moving. I did get more burps that way but if I didn't get any with that method after about a minute, I gave up and let her nurse again. Eventually I learned her "I need to burp" cues. (Popping off, making a sour face.)
