Retained Placenta...

Hey all,
Just curious...has anyone had a retained placenta? I'm still bleeding (9.5 weeks later). I just talked to a doctor today about it and he's sent me to get an ultrasound. It's not confirmed yet, but the bleeding has picked up substantially today (if this is TMI, I apologize) so I'm wondering if perhaps it IS retained placenta and I'm not paranoid. We'll find out soon enough, I guess.

All this to say has anyone experienced this? Or even a D&C. I'm pretty pissed off at the possibility of having to go back in for surgery after all of this. I thought that I was finally "clear" to just heal. Sorry...feeling frustrated today.

ETA: my iPad formatting sucks. I also sounded angry in this post. Forgive me. I've got my head mostly about me now. It was one rough day yesterday.

I had bleeding for a long time after I delivered Elliott and Ryland. They were afraid I had retained placenta as well, but it turns out it was a hormonal issue. I was bleeding through a tampon and a pad every 15 minutes which was very scary. They had me take 3 birth control pills for a few days and the bleeding finally stopped.

  • no advice on a retained placenta but I have had a d&c...if you have to have one it is really not a big deal.  They will most likely put you under and you will be pretty much back to normal the next day with a few activity restrictions.  FX they figure it out soon!

  • I have something called quiescent trophoblastic disease, which means a small amount of cells got left behind and are producing HCG. It took a little over 10 weeks for my bleeding to stop and even after it stopped it would randomly pick up here and there for a day or so. I didn't have pain or fever which I believe are common signs of retained placenta so my doctors weren't worried. It was only recently they realized my hcg levels were still present.

Was the ultrasound yesterday? How did it go?

  • I really hope it's nothing. I've been bleeding off and on almost every 2 weeks. This point they think it's hormonal. It's annoying as all hell! Since we would like to try again she didn't want to put me on BC. Normally she said she does 3 months on to see of that helps adjust the hormones.
  • Thanks for the hugs and kind words everyone. It is frustrating, but it is what it is. Now I sort of feel like a SS because others have experienced this. Sorry if it came across that way. I’m new to this and the midwife and my doctor seem concerned, so naturally I’m also concerned (probably overly).

@ashtog Thank you – it’s good to hear the experiences of others. I do have some dizziness/weakness, but I’m anemic to begin with and it may just have to do with the significant loss of blood. The rest I haven’t experienced (just lots of clots and heavy bleeding on and off). I’m really sorry that your D&C had complications this time around. That sounds really crappy. FX that it doesn’t last too long if it’s still going on.

@ajsweeton That is really scary. For me, it was every 2 hours for a 12 hour period and that was terrifying, so I can’t even imagine every 15 minutes. That must have been really really tough. I’m glad that the birth control worked. If they find out it’s not retained placenta, maybe I’ll mention that to my doctor. Thank you.

@nola78 This sounds exactly like my bleeding. At one point I thought it even “stopped” for roughly 48 hours and then picked up heavier than ever. Thank you for sharing your story – it gives me some relief.

@kflynn81 The doctor’s appointment was yesterday. I still need to schedule this ultrasound. He said sooner is better. I’ll give them a call tomorrow morning (work was enough for today and because I teach my opportunities to make personal calls are really limited). I’ll let you know how it goes once I’ve got it booked and finished, though. I don’t have a fever or chills either, just ridiculous bleeding alternating from heavy to light basically straight through (minus a possible 48 hour period where it “stopped”).

@nohalo21 Thank you – I hope so too and I hope that your bleeding works itself out along with the hormones. It’s the most frustrating thing. I would also like to TTC relatively soon, but don’t feel comfortable even thinking about it until this is all figured out.

I love this board. You are all so incredibly wonderful. Thank you. <3

  • Sorry you are going through this, I am sure it is so frustrating - I can't say I've had the same experience but my pp bleeding went right into a period which was concerning enough not understanding what my body was doing and if it was right. I know we all just want our bodies back to normal at this point. Sending *hugs* as you get through this.
  • Thanks @Jellybean71514‌ For everyone else, an update, as requested. I just went to my ultrasound appointment yesterday afternoon. The sent the results to my doctor who contacted me today. They've said there is no retained placenta (which is good, I guess), but my uterine lining is thicker than it should be in an area so they sent me for blood tests today. They didn't tell me what they are thinking, but a quick google search definitely doesn't put me at ease. Sorry I'm not the bearer of good news today. I hope that everyone else has had a good week.

  • @LyndseyTS‌ I am thinking good thoughts for you- please keep us posted xo
  • Thanks @ashtog. Here's hoping it's nothing serious. I'm at 10 and a half weeks out at this point and have been bleeding straight since Serenity's birth and it hasn't followed a "normal" pattern (which is why they are concerned I think). Thanks for the FX everyone. I'll post an update when I know what the heck is going on.

  • I said I would update, so here it is! The update is that there isn't one. They don't really know what's wrong. They've scheduled me for a D&C next week. I'm hoping that my body figures things out before then and that it's just "normal" postpartum bleeding that has lasted an abnormal amount of time. It's slowed down a little bit yesterday and today, but I'm hesitant to be hopeful because it's done that before and then come back where I'm bleeding through everything every two hours. So, until the D&C, I won't have much more to share.
