Re: Poll: Getting baby to sleep

  • We're still nursing to sleep. I hope this isn't going to come back to bite us in the future.

  • We nurse to sleep at night but for naps we have to rock/sway/sing/dance/vacuum...I wish I was kidding...

For us it's different every night. We have a checklist of things that have worked in the past that we run through nightly. At some point she falls asleep. Usually. Hopefully within the first 2 hours of the nightly rituals, but that's a good night.

  • @Cara1024‌ It's the weirdest thing, but something about the movement and sound of the vacuum puts her out when she's fussy. That or it calms her down enough to eat. In fact, I'm holding said sleepy baby now and just turned off the vacuum!
  • katagskatags member
We use the vacuum too. It's the only thing that got us through months 2&3

  • Yes! DH loves how the carpet feels clean all the time, but knows when he sees it that we had a rough day.
  • For bedtime we do a bottle of pumped BM and if she's not out after that she gets rocked to sleep. Nap times are usual rocking or bouncing to sleep. Only occasionally do I nurse to sleep at nap time. I'm scared to get into that habit and if I'm not the one putting her to sleep they'll have a hard time.

So I said put down drowsy, but really I lay her on a blanket in the living room and she falls asleep. Then I transfer her to her bed. Swaddled she would go to sleep herself in her bed but it doesn't work as well in the sleep suit.

  • I rock while feeding pumped milk. Then I burp and put down drowsy. She goes to sleep fine but never ever stays asleep more than 4 hours. For naps I just put her down and she goes to sleep.

  • Mine is technically a half and half. I feed her just before bed. Sometimes. She falls asleep nursing other times I put her to bed drowsy if she doesn't fall asleep.

Ours isn't always the same. Most nights I nurse her and then we go to her room and I rock and burp her in the glider chair before putting her down for the night. Sometimes she will go down drowsy and sleep but sometimes I need to rock her for a while to get her to go down.

  • SS - we nurse before bed as part of our routine, but she rarely falls asleep while nursing. I burp her, give the paci, and hold her on my chest until she falls asleep (takes 10-15 minutes). Then I transfer her to the RNP.

I hope I'm not creating bad habits, but it's what's been working for us since about a month old. I've been back at work since she was 7 weeks old, so it's all about survival until I can devote more time to her sleep habits during summer vacation.

  • SS At night, I nurse him to sleep but my husband is the sandman- he can bounce him to sleep anytime. If we are out, I walk with him or rock him. I am going to have to try this vacuum thing out though!
  • SS-we are currently working on putting her in the crib drowsy. She's getting there! Before we were rocking her.

  • Bottle, swaddle and rock for us. He eats about 30 mins prior to being laid down. Rocking is "our time" since my hours with him limited. (Stupid work) FTM, but is rocking them to sleep a bad thing?

  • We bottle feed and when bottle is done DS is normally pretty drowsy but not asleep. We put DS in crib when he is drowsy and he falls asleep on his own
  • SS - she usually falls asleep nursing at bedtime, but wakes up a bit when she's done. Then we still do the shush/walk/pat routine. I'm trying to put her down in her crib quicker, and do the shush/pat in the crib (slowly removing the walking). It all depends how sleepy she is, as to how well it works. At nap time, we just shush/pat/walk.

  • We do a bottle about 30-45 minutes before bed, then rock to sleep. It may be creating bad habits, but I love that time with her. She is put in the sleeper/RnP drowsy or asleep depending on how long we rock.

  • Nurse to sleep. I try once a week to put her down drowsy. It hasn't worked once since the long WW started.

When I had a stomach virus and she took a bottle before bed she had to be walked/rocked to sleep.

  • I'm a douche and posted this too bc I was interested....I didn't look at the polls...just the discussions quickly! Read fail!

In my double post, I wrote my SIL advised me to put down awake bc I'll be expected to rock LO nightly.

  • I put nurse to sleep as that's what we do the majority of the time. If he happens to be awake after nursing though, I put him down awake. Sometimes he then falls asleep on his own, sometimes he gets upset and DH holds him for a minute until he's asleep (a minute or two of holding is all it takes and it has to be DH instead of me. Babies are weird)
