HS Graduation Gift Help (Poll)

My BIL is graduation from high school this week and I want to get him a thoughtful gift. I was thinking about a bin he could reuse for storage in his dorm filled with dorm life essentials (bath caddy, microwaveable foods, roll of quarters for laundry, etc.). So my questions is, should I go with my idea or get him cold hard cash?

  • Maybe get him a few essentials, and then a 25$ gc to target or walmart?

@BC&LM Maybe I should have made a case of beer and cash an option!

ETA: ILs allow BIL to drink, didn't want to sound like I was totally a bad person for giving him alcohol

I usually say cash, but in this case I voted thoughtful.

  • I don't know if many high school boys would appreciate a thoughtful gift? He may prefer cash at the moment not realizing the dorm stuff will be handy later.
  • I voted for the thoughtful gift, but keep in mind how far away he is going and how he is getting there. I actually flew with my parents to college, and ended up leaving a microwave at home because I couldn't get it on the plane.
My sister drive to college about 15 hours away and she had to return a fridge and them buy a new one when she got to school because the fridge wouldn't fit in her car with all her other stuff.

We did have a nephew who graduated last year and since he was away going away for college, we actually ordered a bunch of dorm stuff, microwave, plastic dishes, popcorn ect. and had it delivered to his dorm through amazon the day after he checked in. We just gave him a card and a picture of all the things we had gotten him on the day of graduation.

He'll only be about 3 hours away and his parents will be driving him down so he'll definitely have room. I really like your idea of plastic plates and cups though!

  • @ohheyholy He loved them too. We actually did a whole "Since mom's not there to cook for you anymore" thing and got a whole set of plastic dishes, cups ect. a little coffee pot, a very small crock pot, microwave  the below cookbook and a bunch of $5.00 and 10.00 gift cards to fast food places in the area.

My nephew told us a few times that ours was the college gift he "actually used."
