3rd Trimester

Dizzy Spells

I'm curious if anyone else has dealt with these, I do have a call out to my doctor but am waiting for a call back.

I've had three dizzy spells in the last couple of weeks, I've been prone to fainting in the past but haven't had issues for at least a year or two.  One was a while ago.  Then Last Friday I went to the doctor to get a second steroid shot and when I got to my car got really dizzy, clammy, felt like I was going to faint.  I ended up calling the doctor's and the nurse came out and got me, they gave me a granola bar and some water, checked my blood pressure and it was really low.  I sat there until I was feeling better.  I had eaten breakfast that morning and drank water prior to my appointment.

Just now I experienced the same thing,  I've eaten today and have probably drank about 35 oz of water so far.  We had a handyman coming to fix a few small things, when the door rang I got up to let him in and started feeling dizzy, I directed him to what needed to be fixed and sat on the couch really quick, clammy and again feeling like I was going to faint.

I'm curious to see what the doctor says because they didn't seem worried on Friday when it happened, just told me to be careful and sit if I feel that way again.

Any experiences with this? What did your doctors have you do?

Re: Dizzy Spells

  • I don't get dizzy per say, but I have "seen stars" recently when I am doing something if I move too fast. I have read that in the third trimester can be caused by the pressure the growing uterus places on your major blood vessels, especially when you're lying on your back. I wouldn't worry too much...just make sure you are eating and stay hydrated. Take your time getting up. I plan on asking my OB at my appt. tonight. Hope you are feeling better soon!

Oh I had been experiencing dizzy spells myself... More in the 3rd trimester. I start to feel overheated, out of breath, and almost blacking out a few times. Had to slow down my activity and fast pace walking. The dizzness for me happens mostly in the morning which sucks and scary heading to work in the morning. I mentioned this to my doctor and she suggested that I eat more protein in my diet like protein bars, soy milk or products, eggs, greek yorgurts, etc. that are high in protein. I tried it for weeks and it seemed to help along with soda water and orange juice to settle my stomach. I learned to pace myself and take it way slow when I get up in the morning. The dizzness has lessen and I cut back on over doing things. After all I am not proving anyone to being a superhero. Sit down quickly and breath in slowly and deeply until the feeling subside. Dizzy spells are no joke and can hit suddenly. Your body is telling you to stop and rest from what you are doing.

I've had similar issues, and it sounds like reactive hypoglycemia. It normally hits me about once a year, but while pregnant, it's been frequent.

  • I used to get this every morning at work...didn't matter what I had for breakfast, if I was super hydrated, etc... Without fail, every morning at work I'd feel like passing out, chug a bottle of cold water and lay my head on my desk until it went away. I don't notice it anymore now, but I had asked my MW about it and she wasn't concerned, just said "normal" and if it really bothered me to lay down and elevate my feet (something I wasn't able to do at work) so I always just waited until it passed.

  •  In the mornings I have to be super careful about what I eat and drink. No juice, no gatorade.. even cheerios with a banana was too much sugar. The rest of the day is fine.. just the morning meal can mess my day up. I eat an english muffin with eggs and cheese with a glass of milk and it really makes me feel good. No dizziness and I just have more energy.

  • I had this with my first a lot. And in fact, fainted a few times because of it. Naturally, my blood pressure is low (95/50).  And during my 2nd trimester, my BP dropped lower.  Then in my 3rd, it went up to 100/60 and eventually closer to 105/60.  But, I ended up having low iron counts, so my dr told me to take some iron pills.

This time around, my iron count was fine, and my BP was 100/60 in the 2nd tri, so I never really had any issues. But, this weekend, I did have a dizzy spell. I honestly thought I was going to faint, but luckily, I didn't.

It could be your iron counts. Make sure your prenatal has iron in it, and maybe even take an iron supplement too.

  • My OB said it was the brain and uterus fighting for blood. No big deal, just take it easy.

  • I'm thinking of changing my name to "Dizzy" actually. Mine have been every day for 7 days, multiple times a day, along with headaches and severe migraines. I also had some mild cramping on one occasion. I finally said 'enough' and called my OB. She had me go to the hospital and we did some fetal monitoring, blood pressure readings and a urine sample. So far, the only thing she can see is because I'm slightly dehydrated. I'm also high-risk due to low amniotic fluid, so we also did an ultrasound, which I have to get every 2 weeks as well. The 'spells' are becoming extremely annoying because I feel like I can't do anything for more than 10 minutes, but I'm glad I got it checked and baby is still all good. Drink a butt-ton of water and get extra fruit/veggies. Hope you feel better soon!
  • This happened to me yesterday but with some deep breaths I was feeling better.
