HALP!

DS has been refusing to sleep for the past three or so days. He's been super fussy, extra clingy, wants to nurse constantly and just acts downright miserable. Also he's taken maybe two poops in three days (started solids 2 weeks ago).

Last night he woke up every hr until I finally snuggled in bed w/ him at 2 am where he slept until 6ish. His gums deft look swollen and he has horrible smelling gas. Does this sound like just teething to y'all or teething on top of constipation mixed w/ exhaustion? Or a growth spurt? He's 8 mo/6.5 adjusted. Oh, he has no fever either.

We've given him Advil, gas drops, clove oil on his gums, peaches, prunes, plums, and apple juice or frozen fruit in a teether when he'll take it (but he mostly refuses). I've bicycled his legs, massaged his tummy, given him a warm bath, and nothing seems to help.

I don't know what else to do! Any advice or suggestions?

My baby only goes a couple times a week. So I can't help you there, but if Advil doesn't help the teething pain. I'm thinking something else is probably bothering him also. Have you tried a suppository yet?

  • Most of the fruit you've offered would help him go. I don't know if constipation is to blame. Im thinking probably teething.

  • @jennlin‌ The Advil helps a tiny bit, but it doesn't last 6 hrs like it should. I haven't tried a suppository.

@MangoMama82‌ He's taking a long nap on me now. If he doesn't seem at least a bit happier afterwards, I'll go ahead and give him a call.

My gut says teething, but my FTM anxiety has me concerned I may be missing something.

@jalee85 was the one that suggested advil.

  • No advice for the rest but two poops in three days sounds pretty normal.

  • 2 poops in 3 days is totally normal for us. How much ibuprofen are you giving?

He pooped this morning and since it seems normal to y'all I'm leaning towards teething which I've thought, I just wasn't sure if constipation was contributing. At night, I've been giving 1/2 tsp of Advil pretty much every 6 hrs since the night before last since he seems to be in so much pain. He's right around 17lbs. I'll give it during the day too if he seems super fussy also. Am I over medicating him?

@TXswissmiss‌ I haven't tried banana in a teether, but have tried mango and cold cucumber. He doesn't seem interested, but he'll gnaw on cold toys.

I agree with pps that 2x in 3 days doesn't sound like it would cause this kind of issue. My guess would be teething. Do you babywear? Sometimes (like yesterday) DS gets super clingy and my only option is to babywear. It also helps him to sleep sometimes (yesterday I cleaned half the house before he finally gave up and slept).

Uhmmmm, IDK how the teaspoon measurements work, sorry! I use the new formulation where the dosage goes by ML and comes with the syringe. I give 1.875 ML every 6-8 hours as needed.

  • A hit 8months and decided sleep was for wusses, which made me naturally a happy fun and friendly human being. She slept better last night after 9nights of hell on earth sleep deprivingness. We will see how she does tonight.

A friend said that at 8 months they can start becoming fearful too which isnt good! It can make them regress with their sleeping :(

  • also- whenever dd1 would get her teeth, she would nurse constantly and refuse all solids. even at 1yo she would nurse 12x/day and eat nothing, starting a few days before her teeth broke through. it can hurt their gums to eat.

This is sooooo him! He doesn't want solids and just wants to nurse. Poor baby :(
