Any Fitness Instructors?

I am a fitness instructor, I teach indoor cycling and gravity. I'm wondering at what point did other fitness instructors stop teaching? This isn't my 'full time job' more like an awesome hobby that I get paid for! I also work full time, so at the end of my business day I go teach 4 times per week, and then I'm exhausted! I'm 24 weeks and I feel like throwing in the towel until after I deliver, just wonder what other expecting fitness mom's are doing!

Re: Any Fitness Instructors?

  • Hey! Congrats on your pregnancy. I'm a personal trainer and running coach, and just over 32 weeks pregnant. I'm still teaching 3 morning Bootcamp classes a week, though I definitely modify some of the exercises.
With my first pregnancy, I taught classes right up until I had my son, at 37w4d. I stopped teaching cycling pretty early on (I think around 15 weeks), taught core class and low-impact aerobics and a toning class all the way through. I averaged 2-3 classes a week.
I'm also a distance runner, currently keeping up with 40 miles/week, and feeling good!
Is the gym you work for ok with you dropping down to teaching maybe just twice a week? GF instructing is tough- especially after working a full day! Sometimes finding that extra bit of energy you need to lead class can be a challenge.

    Mommy to R (8.23.11) and K (6.21.14).

  • I'm a vinyasa yoga instructor who teaches three times a week. It's my intention to teach right up until I pop this baby out, because I saw my own teacher do it successfully. :) I'm at 31 weeks right now, and things are just starting to get uncomfortable. Until now, I'd just been modifying twists and on-the-belly stuff, but had been able to do everything else with comfort. As I get to the end days, I demonstrate less and less. Of course, it's all about listening to your body, and easing off on the things that don't feel right. Good luck with whatever you choose to do! I say there's no shame in backing off on your teaching schedule if it's leaving you drained.

I'm a group fitness instructor and currently 18 weeks.  I teach 3 classes/week and also workout on my own.  I teach at a university, so due to the need to commit to classes on a semester-based schedule, I plan on teaching through August, so up until about 32 weeks.  I teach some pretty intense classes, and I can already tell it's getting more difficult to motivate the members to keep up the pace when I am taking it slower or using modifications.  I've found that some classes lend themselves better to teaching while pregnant than others.

I gave up my core-focused class right away and kept with the cardio classes until I taught my last at 21 weeks.  I felt like I wasn't able to give 100%, and I wanted to focus on what felt best for ME vs. what the class needed.  It's also nice to be able to go home after work if I want and take a break from the commitment.  I still workout 3-4x per week and am fully enjoying the flexibility but looking forward to getting back to teaching.
  • I am a spin instructor and due to our issues to get pregnant I didn't teach the first trimester (lied and said I hurt my knee) and then once I made it to the 2nd trimester my doctor gave me the green light and just said listen to your body and don't go overboard.  I taught up to 2 weeks before I had my baby.  I didn't go as hard as I did before being pregnant but still felt like I got a good work out in.
  • Thanks Ladies! I had my last class yesterday! The spin part was no problem, but I was becoming a less than effective gravity instructor since I could no longer demonstrate anything on my stomach, and demonstrating most of the ab work was becoming very uncomfortable. I'm already enjoying the extra time I'll have this week to do my own workouts and start working on the baby's room!
