UTI--Group B Strep--anyone have this/experience this?

Ladies,

I am on antibiotics for what my doctor suspected last Friday was a developing UTI.  Sure enough, I received an email today re: the lab results, and my urine culture did test positive for >100,000 on Group B Strep--message said to simply continue the anitbiotics.  I googled for a few minutes, got scared, and decided to just throw it out here for more filtered and thoughtful advice.  Anyone have a UTI that resulted in this diagnosis?  My doctor or nurses line did not call, so I know it couldn't be too serious.  But some online literature suggests it might be indicative of or cause problems later on, and that's a "rarer" form of UTI.

Anyone with any experience, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks!

  • With my first pregnancy I had a UTI at 12 weeks. They also determined that I was positive for group B strep. From my understanding everyone gets tested around 36 weeks for it anyway. It was really no big deal. They told me that I would just have antibiotics while in labor, and that ended up not happening because I had a csection.

For me it was not much of an experience because it did not change anything. I personally know several others who tested positive as well. They had no complications.

  • Tested positive during my first pregnancy for group b strep. the only difference in my labor and that of my friends was they had me check into the hospital earlier in the process so that I could get a couple good doses of iv antibiotics in my system prior to delivering. My doc said likely, it will be a repeat this time around, though you can test positive one pregnancy and negative another. You can also test positive during one part of your pregnancy and negative a few weeks later.
  • It also depends on how far along you are now. Your body may clear the infection after the antibiotics. It's not typically an issue in non-pregnant women with a normal immune system, but since we're pregnant, they will treat it as a UTI. Good news is that Group B strep isn't resistant to antibiotics.

  • I wouldn't worry too much!  I had group b strep as well and they just gave me two doses of IV antibiotics during labor.  My baby was fine and healthy and I had a great recovery!  You will be fine.

Group b strep is a type of bacteria that is found in the vagina. You can show it early on with a urine screen but they mainly test you for it around 36wks with a swab that is inserted into your vagina and swab downward towards your rectum. You can be positive with one pregnancy and negative with the next. When you are in labor they will give you antibiotics, this is to keep the baby from getting sick. You generally get antibiotics every four hours until you deliver but every facility is different. Not to be confused with a sexually transmitted infection either you didn't catch it. Hope this helps..
  • I was diagnosed via urine test this pregnancy.  My OB's nurse said I would be treated with antibiotics during labor but that it was a pretty common issue and I shouldn't worry about it.
  • Group b strep isn't a big deal if treated. It's not harmful to you in anyway. It could be harmful to the baby but because you tested positive your
Midwife or doctor will start you on antibiotics as soon as you enter the hospital. Depending on how long your labor is they may have to repeat them again before your baby is born.

I was tested positive with my first pregnancy and had no issues. I testing negative for my following two pregnancies so I didn't have to worry about the antibiotics.

    Hope that is helpful!

I was diagnosed with UTI last Wednesday (May 7) and prescribed antibiotics (Macrobid). The culture came back on Monday (May 12) positive for Group B Strep. I was prescribed Ampicillin and told to discontinue the Macrobid as it will not clear up the Group B Strep.
  • With my 1st pregnancy I was diagnosed with a UTI and also positive for Group B strep at 37 weeks. I took the antibiotics I was prescribed and was given them during birth as well. All was good, doctor said it's nothing to worry about.
