Morning engorgement - please help

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I'm mobile with a swirmy baby in my lap, so please take pity on me and indulge me this one time.

When LO starts to sleep through the night and you wake up engorged - do you pump or not? I want my supply to adjust to match this new lovely pattern. Will pumping prevent this adjustment? I am uncomfortable and if possible waiting for a response (hopefully someone else knows and is awake to read this/respond) and mr. Google is being an asshole, I already asked him. Thanks in advance!

I had the same question but I'm also wondering about engorgement leading to blocked ducts. I've had a blocked duct twice now. My LO seems to be going 4-5 hour stretches now (was about 3) but my boobs are still full at the 3.5 hour mark. I'm afraid of letting them go 5 hours because can't that lead to another blocked duct? Or no? I don't seem to be very good at hand expressing, but maybe I should just continue to try that to make it until he's ready to eat again?

OP- Sorry, I don't mean to hijack your post! Hopefully the answers can help you too!

  • I always just wait it out.  They will adjust.  And, @Jmd527, when my son started to STTN I did get a few blocked ducts.  I was always able to unblock them with warm compresses and nursing, but it does suck.

I always avoid pumping whenever possible.

  • Thank you for the tips. I ended up pumping after posting that on the side LO didn't feed from. I probably should have mentioned my LO is 6 months, so my concern was not MOTN but for when I woke in the morning, in my discomfort this morning I was not so eloquent.

@Jmd527‌ I had trouble with clogged ducts and mastitis a few months ago, 5 hours should be fine as long as you pump or feed your LO at the end. Like PP said warm compresses and some massage should provide relief! Good luck! Oh and I've been at this for 6 months and can't hand express either, I just do a minute on my pump for that.

I wait it out but unfortunately, mine still aren't adjusting. She's been sttn since 8 weeks (she's 4m now) and I still wake up with rocks on my chest. She'll take 1 side at 5am and then will fall right back asleep so I'll pump the other side. I'm still waiting for the adjustment. :(

  • theresat858, I'm glad you responded because I've been wondering this for awhile...well, 2 months. DD2 has been sleeping from 8pm-5/6am. She'll nurse from 1 side when she wakes and like I mentioned, I'll pump the other unused side. I know that by pumping the side she's not nursing from, it's telling my body to keep producing that. Shouldn't my body start regulating a little bit so that I'm not SO engorged overnight since I'm not using either boob for 10-11 hours? I do like to pump the other side to help with when I'm at work (and for stash reasons) but I'm still quite uncomfortable making it to 5/6am. I guess I expected my supply to adjust to waiting for 10-11 hours.

I'm on about day 5, I am starting to see adjustment. For the last 3 months I have woken between 2-4am, fed LO one side and pumped the other. We haven't woken up in a week in the MOTN for a feeding so I dropped that pump as well. I do pump the side she doesn't eat in the morning and I am seeing less rock hard engorgement in the morning. Thanks for all the tips.

@theresat858‌ I agree with the first comment but not the second. If you pump in the MOTN I agree you won't adjust until you drop that pump. But in the morning it seems to not be affecting the adjustment. You were right about 5 days- thanks!!!
