Preemies

IUGR babies walking?

I know she wasn't technically a preemie, but my daughter was an IUGR baby born at 37 weeks at 3 pounds 10 ounces. I was wondering if anyone on here has any experience with IUGR babies in terms of development...

She is about to turn 12 months on May 16, and has still not mastered even standing on her own for more than about 5-7 seconds. SHe has been crawling (regular, not army) since 7 months and pulling herself up since about 8 months, and just cruising since about 9 months.

I was not expecting her to be walking yet, bus she doesn't seem too interested in even standing on her own. I am just curious about how other people's IUGR babies were in terms of the big walking milestone. Thanks!!

  • DS' pedi said even if DS wasn't a preemie he wouldn't be concerned about him not walking until around 15 months. Your daughter is definitely still in the average timeframe for walking! Good luck to you!

We have been told by our daughter's CP doctor, and PT, that if a child sits independently by the age of 2, that child has a very good chance if walking independently. Since your child crawls, pulls up and cruises (and just turned one), I don't think you have anything to worry about.

My daughter had IUGR. She was born full term but weighed 5lb (3rd percentile). She was pulling up & cruising by a year, but didn't walk independently until almost 15 mo. You still have time! I know it seems like there are so many early walkers at 10 mo that it's abnormal to not walk by a year. Try not to stress about it though. It sounds like she has all the building blocks to make it happen.

My son had IUGR (5lb'er) and was never at any disadvantage throughout every development stage. He didn't walk particularly early but as soon as he could walk, there was no stopping him.

He's now a strapping, meaty, taller-than-me 16 year old Mommy's boy and not even a little tiny hint that he was ever small. :) Take heart, they all develop at different rates.

Dd1 had iugr, it wasnt ever mentioned (that i can recall) during her nicu stay, just briefly covered at discharge. It didnt cause any delays with her development and she was walking at 18 mos actual, which is when her developmental specialist wanted to see her starting to try to walk.
