Party question

My grandparents have offered to let us host dd's birthday party at their house again this year. They have a pool (that is fenced) and last year we had a pool party. Only three people swam. Would it be weird to have the party there but not have a pool party?

Re: Party question

  • Weird? A little? I mean, if you're inviting the same people, wouldn't they expect to swim? Especially if it's an outside party? I don't know, I would find it odd to have a party with a pool in the yard and no swimming if the weather was right for it.

What was the theme last year? Did people know there was a pool? What's the theme this year?

  • Theme was Minnie Mouse last year. This year it is frozen. It was going to be jake and the never land pirates but dd dropped jake for frozen.

I told dh it was weird. Most of my friends and their husbands won't want to be in swimsuits but their kids are so little that they need an adult in the water with them. There will be two kids who could swim without an adult in the pool with them. I doubt the other eight children will swim or have parents who want to take them in.

So would you call it a pool party even though I know many people won't swim? I will also have a water table, a tunnel and tent set up and other toys available. Is that less awkward?

Just call it a pool party, and the people who want to swim with their kiddos can. If they don't, then they don't have to. Some people might even want to if it's warmer. It's nice to at least have the option, even if there are other activities available.

Or don't call it a pool party but say in the invite ...bring your bathing suit if you'd like to go for a dip.

I think we will do this. That way no one has a problem like 80s would. Thanks!

  • I've had a handful of parties at my parents house, and they have a pool in their backyard but it's not used for the party.  It hasn't been an issue.  Their pool has a cover on it, so if it's closed no one asks about going in there.

  • Could you hire a lifeguard from a local pool? How old are these 8 other kids? Honestly I've never been around a pool and not had kids want to go in so I find that so odd! :)
  • If everyone who is invited shows up... There will be a 10, 5, (the two whose parents let them swim without being in the pool with them), 4, three 3, three 1 and a six month old. There's a gate and a fence so those other kids wouldn't even be able to go over.

  • Maybe it's because we pretty much have pool-appropriate weather all year round here, but I swear it hasn't been an issue. I've been to other parties at houses with pools and never expected to go in it if it wasn't called a "pool party" or swimming wasn't mentioned. But if you want to open it up to swimmers, a line about it on the invitation is a good idea. If it said that, I would likely bring suits just in case.
