Thin Lining - how thin is too thin?

My transfer has been pushed back three different times (three weeks in a row) due to a thin lining - it's currently a 6.5mm and my RE wants to see a 7.5 before we schedule the transfer. I have been taking baby aspirin, prenatal vitamins, estrace and I've been using vivelle dot patches. My hormone levels are right on track but the lining just isn't getting thicker. I had an endometrial scratch last week in hopes to thicken the lining - has anyone else had this? Did it help?

My RE has said that if we can't get it thicker, we'll have to cancel the cycle. Considering I'm on a bit of a time crunch, I can realistically only cycle twice more. Anyone else have a transfer with a thin lining resulting in a little lovebug?

I think some RE want above 7.0 and some above 8.0. I think my only PGD normal fresh transfer was a failure because mine was just over 7. I know it's very hard to wait or cancel, but you don't want to look back and wonder if you should have.
Me: 37, DH: 38: ttc 7 years, dx: unknown
    10/11: after 2 years, saw a RE, FSH 5.4
11/11: BFP! (surprise after thyroid & normal hsg),
    12/11: missed m/c after 7 week u/s, 1/12: D&C
    6/12 IUI#1-IUI #3: clomid = BFP!, C/P
    IVF #1(10/12) FSH 5.4, AFC: 16 long Lupron, 5R/5M/4F, all 4 made it to 5dt, 1 blast/1-8 cell transferred=BFN
    IVF #2(12/12)AFC 21, MD lupron, 4R/4M/3F, 5dt of 1 blast and 2-8cell. BFN.
IVF#3(4/13) Natural start antagon protocol, 12R,11F. one PGS normal at day 6 transfer. BFN.
IVF#4 (11/13) C.CRM (ODW.U normal 8/13 Still no Diagnosis) EPP/antagonist. ER 13R/7M/6F. Only 1 made it to freeze. Abnormal. Looking into options of DE, Fresh vs frozen.
10/14 new local RE to look into what's next. CD3 FSH 4.7, AMH 0.9. Met with DE agencies and exploring options for feb/march 2015.
Surprise natural bfp (4 days before donor is signed). Beta #1 at 9dpo: 51.8, 2nd beta: 195 (25 hours doubling) @11dpo. 3rd beta (12/15): 516 (35 hrs doubling) 4th beta(12/17): 895 (58 hours doubling) 5th beta(12/19): 2120. U/S at 5w0d(12/22): one gestational sac with yolk sac. U/S #2 (6w0d)12/29. One little bean measuring 6w0d with HR 124. 3rd u/s(1/4)7w0d: baby measuring 7w2d. HR 134. 3/30: A/S at MFM went great except for low lying placenta. Verifi results are normal! Team Blue! Please send any positive thoughts our way! EDD:8/24/2015

  • Sorry to hear that your lining is causing you so much stress. My lining has always been borderline... it has always gotten there, but it was stressful every step of the way. Out of our three IVF egg retrievals, we have only ever had one blastocyst. We did a FET in April, and of course my lining was stubborn. It just barely made it over 7, but I told the doctor that if things weren't absolutely ideal that I'd prefer to cancel and try again with another cycle. After all we went through to get one blast, I didn't want to squander our chances!

Like PPs said, I drank POM juice every day and ate Brazil nuts. I also was switched to 2mg of Estrace three times a day taken vaginally. It worked! I got a lining over 7, and the pattern was good! Sadly the cycle resulted in a BFN, but I have no regrets about my lining. I know we did our best.

    Good luck!!

Dx: Unexplained IF, Arcuate Uterus, Minimal Endometriosis, Poor Embryo Quality
Tx History: 1 Injects+TI, 5 IUIs, 3 IVFs, 1 FET = all BFN and full of heartbreak
Plan: Waiting to see if our potential donor is a match for DE IVF #1

  • Thank you all for the advice and support! I did start the estrace vaginally so I hope that helps :) I have a follow-up appointment tomorrow for another lining check, so fingers crossed this week was just what I needed! If not, I plan to start drinking some POM and trying acupuncture... I'll pretty much try anything :)

    Happy almost Friday!

  • Lining problems is the one issue I never had.  My current clinic looks for at least 7mm, but my previous clinic wanted over an 8. I know some women do better with delestrogen injections over vivelle or estrace.  Also I've known a few women who took viagra suppositories and/or Terbutaline (sp?) to help with lining issues. I've also heard of some women who have to take stims in order to build a lining.

    PAIF/SAIF Welcome!

  • My RE did not use lupron with me for any of my cycles. I did take the BCP for a cycle before starting estrogen. I've used delestrogen injections and they seem to work well. They are my REs preference. Best wishes to you.

  • @jenek0213 - interesting on the lining increase once off lupron! I've been on it for over 40 days so I wonder if that had any affect.

I have such good news to share - the endometrial scratch worked! My lining is triple stripe, 7.5mm as of this morning. We have officially gotten a transfer date of Tuesday or Thursday depending on 3 or 5 day embies. I can't believe we're finally moving onto the next step. Tomorrow starts the PIO injections, here goes nothing!

Hope everyone has fun weekend plans!

  • I've always had a thin lining. For my de transfer I just barely got to 7 (and that was on the donor's retrieval date...I know they actually like to see 7 before that day) I was really worried about it but it worked! I was on estrace orally 3x per day and vaginally 2x per day.

  • We had several IVF cycles that were cancelled due to thin lining. We finally used vaginal suppositories of Viagra and achieved a lining superior to all of the extra estradiol that they could pump into us:)
