High-Risk Pregnancy

Please help...need cerclage info!

We lost our son at 20 weeks because of incompetent cervix.  I am currently about 6 weeks pregnant.  My doctor said he would be doing a cerclage because he believes that will help this time.  I am also a preschool teacher.  I have been told by several people I will probably be put on bedrest.  What can I expect with the procedure, and afterwards?!?!!

I lost mine at 22+6 due to the same thing. This pregnancy, I had a cerclage placed at 13 weeks. It was on a Friday. I was told to relax for the weekend, and not lift more than five pounds for a week. I'm 36 weeks tomorrow, and my cerclage is coming out on Wednesday. I've had no bed rest, only pelvic rest since the cerclage was placed. I've also not been allowed to lift so much that I have to bear down...basically, no more than a 12 pack of soda. I asked about the 17P shots, but my MFM group decided that there would likely be no benefit, since I don't seem to have an irritable uterus.

I wish you the best of luck!

Also, the procedure itself wasn't too bad. I had a spinal for it, but I don't think it numbed me sufficiently. I was able to manage. I left the hospital within two hours of being taken to the OR. They gave me ibuprofen for pain management. Don't eat anything spicy immediately after having it done. I got Chipotle and had hot sauce on it, and then I couldn't poo from not being able to feel my ass for hours afterward. Lol.

  • I lost my son at 20 weeks also, then had a cerclage for my second son at 16 weeks. I'm not pregnant again, and just had the cerclage yesterday at 13 weeks 2 days. With my second son, I was on complete bedrest before and after the cerclage because it didn't take. With this one, my MFM thinks he caught it just in time that I may not need long term bedrest. The actual procedure took about 15 mins, I had to be at hosp two hours early to get prepped. You'll get an epidural and will be completely numb from waist down. They'll put you in stirrups and the whole OR room will see you in all your glory LOL. They'll move the bed where your feet are towards the ceiling and head is towards the floor. They will empty your bladder if needed, then begin the cerclage. I didn't feel a thing, barely any pressure either. Only when they moved and the bed shook did I know they were really down there doing something. Oh, they'll also clean you really good with betadine, all over your thighs as well. When its all done, they'll do a vaginal ultrasound to see the stitch and let you know how it goes. The most painful part for me was having an incredibly full bladder in recovery and not being able to empty it. My abdomen was the first thing that started getting feeling back, and I starte cramping pretty bad. Once the feeling came back more and more I realized it was because I had to pee so bad. But my left leg took FOREVER so it was hours before I could even try to pee. I was absolutely miserable to be honest. The last thing for feeling to come back was my vagina and butt. We left the hospital at 1:00, had been there since 5:30. Now I'm on bedrest yesterday and today, then can resume limited activities tomorrow. I am out of work for the week. I'll go back one week post op to check how my cervix is holding and measure it then we'll know if long term bedrest is in my future as before...praying like crazy that its not. Cerclages are safe if done early, and you should have no concerns. I also have a placenta previa, where my placenta is completely covering my cervix, and no complications or risks are involved with that. Take care, will be praying for you! Oh, how funny....I'm also the preschool coordinator at my church, and just stepped down this past week. We have lots in common :)

    Will be praying for you!!

Very similar to mine. Lost our son at 18 weeks but have a healthy 7 month old after a cerclage was placed at 13 weeks. No bed rest or p17 shots. Just no heavy lifting and took it easy a few days after procedure.

Cerclage was removed at 36 weeks but stayed intact and delivered st 39 weeks. Congrats and best wishes!
