When you pump at work, do you pump from only one side or both during a session?

This is my third time doing this, I should know, but I'm just curious. Right now, I just pump from both sides? I feel like I'm doing it wrong, though...

  • I have a double electric Medela, so both at once!  Great time-saver.

That's what I use, too @rosebud1308 but then I started second-guessing myself as I don't normally feed from both at the same time feeding.

  • Definitely both with my double electric. I'd never get enough if I didn't! And LO only eats on one side per feeding except right before bed.

  • I pump both sides when pumping at work, but only pump one side every morning that I still have to feed LO (on the opposite side). Lately, even double pumping, i have been only getting 3.5-4oz per session, and she eats 5oz bottles. Luckily, I only work part time, or I would be in a lot of trouble, milk-wise!

  • So far the 2 days I pumped both sides I was super engorged for the next 2 days and went backwards in the oversupply battle. Currently I pump one side and alternate. My pumping output is starting to decrease a little bit, so if that continues I may go back to both sides.

  • Why would you only pump one side??

  • While at work I pump both sides. I use a manual pump because my Ameda sucks(or doesn't). I do 10-15 minutes on each breast and get about 4-5oz of milk. If I don't do each breast my whole chest would feel like it's going to explode.

  • Definitely agree with PPs. I wear a handsfree bra and pump both sides.

I would have stopped pumping long ago without this bra. It lets me use my hands to do things like type this response!

  • I have a couple of VS nursing bras from a few years ago that work well for me to pump hands free because...small? ;) And tiny, mosquito bites when not BFing haha!

The only reason why I wondered about doing one side/session is because if it would create an oversupply by doing both?  I don't have a problem with oversupply, but was wondering if it would create an issue.

  • Also this poll is irritating me because I didn't grammar check it real well after typing it.  I didn't realize it couldn't be edited right after posting it; and I didn't 'preview'. smh

The only time I don't pump from both sides is when I'm about to head home, and I think LO will be hungry when I get there. So I save one side for her. :)

  • Also-for those that don't have/can't afford a hands free bra- as an alternative to cutting a sports bra to make your own, you can also use ponytail holders looped around your bra strap or clip, and attatched to the pump horn. That's what I do, and tuck the bottom part of the flange inside the bra cup, sort of pulling them up over the flange. It only works with one of my 2 styles of bras though.

  • Thanks for asking @sprashley‌ as I was wondering the same thing. Last time I did both as I was not producing enough as it was but this time I wasn't sure because my supply is better for this LO.
    And then there were three...

  • @njb750‌ The prospect of 5 streams is just too exciting. I think I need to go to Target today and get some new membranes!

Has anyone tried cutting open a Bella Band and adding a Velcro closure? I'm baffled that I haven't been able to find a hands-free bra that is Velcro closed. Zippers, hook & eyes, are you kidding me? Am I missing something here?
I haven't tried it, but that is a great idea! And so easy to add-on velcro.  I won't be using my Bella Band again anyway!

Have you tried the hair tie hands free trick?

The Simple Wishes bra has a velcro back.
