Fever? Teething?

Sorry for the super long post...But a little back story..DS will be 2 next month.  He's currently working on all 4 eye-teeth with one finally (after MONTHS) popped through, another one just under the surface, and the other two visible but they have a ways to go yet.  Also, DS had a febrile seizure a couple months ago when his temperature suddenly spiked (like within a half hour) from normal up to about 104 and we about a week later found out he had RSV so that must've been the virus that caused the fever.

Anyway...Thursday he started developing a fever.  It wasn't too bad--hovering around 101--but I took him to the doctor anyway because we freak out about stuff like this now after having witnessed his seizure a couple months ago.  He'd been pulling at his ear, not acting like himself, etc.  Doctor checked him out, even tested him for strep just in case--everything came back clean.  I hate feeling like we are dealing with a "mystery virus".  Two days later and we are still having to give him Advil almost around the clock.  This afternoon his temp rectally read 103.7.  The thing is, once the Advil kicks in he is FINE.  His temp drops (not to normal, but to not-scary levels), he acts totally normal, he eats, he drinks...as soon as that med wears off though, watch out.  He is BURNING UP, super crabby, lethargic, etc.  If his temp is still high Monday I will be taking him back to the doctor since that will be day 5 of a fever, but has anyone had experience with something similar??  I know that PART of his high temp and ear pulling can be his teeth.  But teething alone won't cause a temp that high, and he also is coughing and has a runny nose.  The part that really gets me though like I said is when the medicine is kicked in you'd never know there was anything wrong.

Thoughts??  Ideas?

When my DD had the hand, foot and mouth virus, she also spiked crazy high fevers like you are describing. As soon as the meds wore off, it went back to 103-104 temps. Does your LO have any little white bumps or blisters on hands, feet, diaper area or in their mouth? I'd push lots of fluids, popsicles, and just try to stay on top of the fever. GL!

If he is pulling at his ear, it sounds like an ear infection. Especially if he has a runny nose, it should be checked out by his pedi because it could be relieved by antibiotics.

ETA- I just saw that you went to the pedi for this, it could be a mystery virus or a missed ear infection, or another missed infection so keep an eye on him. DD had a fever of 104.5 for 3 days and they couldn't find anything. It scared me though so we brought her to the ER and followed up with pedi.

Sounds like a viral upper respiratory infection, or an ear infection.  If his ears are clear, maybe the doctor can check for a urinary tract infection.
