Breastfeeding

Coffee and breastfeeding...

I just had my third lo. I am a mom with three under four :) when I'm not pregnant or breastfeeding I live off coffee. With this lo I'm exclusively breastfeeding - my midwife said one reg coffee was perfectly ok and it doesn't seem to affect my lo at all. But by mid afternoon I'm beat exhausted and a zombie. Wanting to have a decaf coffee on top of the reg... Too much? What's your experience? I know decaf barely has any caffeine but it's enough to trick my body til my husband gets home to help out. Do you think a reg and decaf coffee a day is too much????

Every baby is different when it comes to caffeine. I have a travel mug (about 12 oz) of coffee in the morning and then sometimes a second one in the afternoon. My LO does not seem strongly affected by it.

Edit to add: The afternoon cup (when I have it) is a regular cup, not a travel mug full.

I have 2 cups of coffee daily - LO doesn't seem to mind at all, though I did have a cup every day while pregnant too.

I'm a tea drinker (and by drinker I mean just hook up the IV and give me a constant drip).  I would have one regular cup in the morning and then switch to decaf for the rest of the day.  I did't notice any issues with LO.

The only time he maybe had an issue with my caffeine intake was when he was about a week old.  I had a coke at about 5pm and no one slept that night.  It may have been a coincidence but I didn't want to test the theory so it was about a few months until I tried having caffeine that late in the day again and at that point he was fine.
  • I drank a lot of coffee when breastfeeding my 2nd.  Never bothered him a bit.

  • I am only drinking decaf myself, I have only found a reaction to regular soda, coke specifically. Decaf coffee even if consumed after dinner hasn't made a noticeable impact for me.

fwiw, my doctor told me that whatever you do in pregnancy, be it one regular a day or none at all, or 2 cups(he advised against any more than that) that could continue after LO was born because they would be used to that level of caffeine.

  • I drink a latte every morning and my LO doesn't mind at all. My OB told me that I would have to drink 4-6 cups of coffee, 3-4 lattes or 6-8 cans of soda daily for it to REALLY affect her. But she also said every baby is different and they can be sensitive and that usually it effects babies more if mom didn't drink any caffeine during pregnancy.
