At Home Child Care

Looking ahead to when I return to work after maternity leave...
We will have MIL watch LO two days a week at her home and a friend's mother watch her the other three days at her home where she already watches another child during the day. How much is appropriate to pay them?

This will vary greatly from state to state and city to city. I'd ask your MIL what she would like to be compensated for her commitment and time. I'd ask the friend what her going infant rate is (since she watches other children).

My sister has been watching DS during the week while we work. We ended up calling some local daycares and paying her similarly. DS is only there for about 6 hours a day. My sister wouldn't provide a rate so H and I just had to come up with something on our own.

Around here the going rate for in-home care starts at $15/hour. There are a few high schoolers providing something more like babysitting for $10/hour.
  • Ok this helps us start to figure it out. Thank you!
  • Seriously though - someone on here saying their going rate is $15/ hour is probably NOT going to be helpful where you live. That's not at all the going rate where we live. Try Craigslist, or, ya know, communicating with the people who will care for your child...

Ditto. $15 an hour is well above what we'd pay here. You really need to talk to whoever is watching your kid.

Conversely, $15/hour is well below the going rate in my area. Some of the babysitting sites like care.com could help you get an idea of local rates, too.
