Refusing to nurse on one side

edited May 2014 in Breastfeeding
DD is 4 days old. My milk came in this morning and ever since she has been refusing the left breast. I thought it was because it was so damn engorged and hard she couldn't latch on. And in fact it took me a combination of hand expressing, ice and warm compresses to get it soft enough to be able to pump it to relieve engorgement. But now that I pumped some it is mostly soft, yet DD still won't sustain a latch on that side. Any ideas what is going on? In the mean time she's nursing from the right breast only and I'm pumping the left breast.

  • Thanks that worked. I got DD to take the left side in the football hold.

  • My 2 week old is the same way. He'll take the right side in a cross cradle hold but the left side has to be in football hold. He hates the left side though. I think it's because the right side seems to flow faster and the left side, he has to work harder with.
