Pacifier

My daughter is very good about putting herself to sleep, but she needs her pacifier to do it. Once she's asleep, if it falls out she doesn't wake up. But if she wakes up and doesn't need to eat, she can't get herself back to sleep without it. So she normally eats around 2 and 6, but DH and I get up probably 4 more times in addition to give her the pacifier. We give it to her right away because if we let her fuss, she gets herself hysterical and then can't get back to sleep. Any suggestions? We don't want to completely get rid of it yet because she loves it.

Re: Pacifier

  • This is DS2, but I only need to give it to him once and this is a big reason why he is still next to me in our room. Sorry I am not more help. Interested to see what others say.

We just moved her to her crib so I think we're noticing it more now!

Also, maybe I'm confused....are you asking for alternatives, or if you should take it away?

I agree with you about not taking it away. She loves it! I guess I'm just wondering if there is a way for her to learn to go back to sleep when she wakes up during the night without DH or I going in to give her the pacifier.

Shes a little young, yet. Have patience. Do you swaddle her? My LO sleeps best when she's swaddled.

Ya she definitely sleeps better swaddled because otherwise she knocks her pacifier out.

I just googled it! Apparently our options are to wait until 8 months when their fine motor skills allow them to put the pacifier back in on their own, or let them cry it out when they lose it at night. 5 more months and my baby will be learning a new trick!!

Don't get your hopes up :-). Every baby is different and he may, 'choose' not to self soothe with the paci plus by 8 months hopefully he automatically sleeps longer hours.

Also if you don't want the wannanubs and want to stick with the nuk you could try these. I however seriously doubt either of them are safe in the crib at night. I may be wrong.

    That's actually kind of cool.
  • I also use wubanub at night. We just lay it on her chest so it stays there for her. But i still have her in the room with us for this reason, and she still loses that a few times a night. So guess that doesnt help you much

  • I think this will pass, eventually she'll blindly flail around till she finds it herself and pops it back in.

Yes, this, at least that's how DD1 was!
