Beauty products

So this may be a super silly question I'm 14wks new mom and I am just wondering if anyone out there switched shampoo during pregnancy or make up products because of the "bad" chemicals in it I read an article on here of course that had a list of "safe" products during pregnancy and of course I bought into some like the nine naturals shampoo..let's just say I can't do 9 months of buying that 24$ 8oz bottle but I also don't want to over worry about it since they say all these chemicals affect baby...opinions and please be nice!

Meh.  I don't get too worked up about things that I'm not actually ingesting.  I use Aveda shampoo products, and it never occurred to me to switch to something more natural (or to even check to see how natural Aveda is).  It's a personal choice - if you feel more comfortable using a shampoo that is all natural (and likely more expensive), go for it.  But I personally don't worry that shampoos, lotions, conditioners, deodorants, etc are going to harm my baby.

  • Unless I'm eating it or breathing it in for a prolonged period (constantly being around smokers, for example,) I don't worry too much about short-term exposure to chemicals that have been deemed safe to use on human skin. When I first got pregnant with LO #1, my OB gave me a list of foods, activities, etc. that I should avoid. If it's not on that list, I'm not going to stress out about it.

  • Same here, no change in products except I stopped using a facewash with salicylic acid and now just use a neutrogena naturals one.

Ditto. I do use a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner, though.

  • I've always used Arbonne, so it was never an issue for me. Sure I might spend a little bit more but you get what you pay for... I have sensitive skin so I have to spend more on beauty/skin care.

    This.
  • As PP posts said I did not feel it necessary to change to more natural products that were only staying on my skin/hair for a couple of minutes.  However, I had to change my foundation, facewash, and body wash to products for sensitive skin because the pregnancy has made my skin EXTREEMLY vulnerable to irritation, rashes, and burning (another wonderful unknown symptom of pregnancy).  I still use pocket book friendly products such as Dove, and Oil of Oley.

This. Plus, I feel like I don't use that much anyway as compared to my other shampoos/skincare/etc, so it evens out. The only thing of theirs I asked about was Genius because of the retinoid, but since it's topical, she didn't have a problem with it.

  • I haven't changed except my Facewash and only because the smell was killing me with first tri nausea. I thought Aveda was known for being a natural brand?
  • I recently joined "the honest company" online and I am using their body was, lotion, cleaning products etc. For my face I just use Argan oil, but I was more concerned with the harsh cleaning products I was inhaling.

I like that I order it once a month and can switch out products and it gets shipped right to my door. Plus the products smell great. I plan to use these on baby too. I will NOT be using Johnson and Johnson, no matter how badly I want that 'baby smell'.

Let me know how the honest stuff works I read some reviews online that people got allergic reactions from it and since I have sensitive skin I just figured I'd pass for now but I have friends that swear by the baby wash and I know ill definitely try the diapers once the baby arrives!
  • I don't worry about it, at all. Think how many chemicals you are exposed to on a daily basis, and how many your child will be exposed to after birth. Lab tested and approved cosmetics are the least of my worries, honestly.

I changed all my products pre-pregnancy, but this was before I even thought about having a baby. First of all I changed makeup and skin care because my dermatologist determined that the stuff I was using was too harsh and was irritating my skin. She told me to stay away from sulfates in shampoo, and from parabens, triclosan, phthalates, petrochemicals and mineral oil in my skin care and makeup. Now I wash my face with honey or the oil cleansing method, and take my eye makeup off with jojoba oil. I use argan oil or Yes to Cucumbers facial moisturizer, and a homemade combo of pure shea butter and avocado oil as an eye cream. For makeup I only use products from brands like Josie Maran, Tarte Cosmetics, 100% pure, etc.

I will tell you that although my skin care is a lot cheaper now, my shampoo/conditioner is NOT! I did the wash with baking soda, rinse with apple cider vinegar thing for a while, but ultimately decided I'm too greasy for that every day. Now I'm using pricey $20/bottle Kevin Murphy stuff but it works so well, and I only have to wash every 3 days or so. And the makeup really starts to add up too. :( But I no longer have crazy sensitive skin or scalp, and that has been wonderful!

Just change what you're comfortable with changing - I found it really fun to start using more simple products at least when it came to skin care.

Lurking: I'd stay away from retinoid. I work for a skin care company, and they don't even let the pregnant women touch it (for our experiments, even with protective equipment on). It is dangerous to babies (DNA altering), and there's usually a toxicity warning on the packaging. My supervisor told me that they don't even recommend you handle it at work if you have a baby at home. Personally, I've done studies with it, and it's not even worth the efficacy.

  • Interesting @Meether‌ I don't use the genius line, I actually use the ABC which is the Arbonne Baby Care and it does wonders for my Psoriasis. I also use the other stuff I haven't tried the Genius stuff yet... I've just been so satisfied with what works for me so I haven't branched out to try the new line yet.
  • I stopped using skin products with salicylic acid at the advice of my doctor, but that's it.
  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE Arbonne! I started using the ABC line a year ago on my 2 year old who was breaking out in a rash to everything we tried. My husband and I now only use Arbonne products in our house and I have recently started working for the company as a consultant. If anyone wants more information on the products please let me know.

Lurking from 1st Tri.  You can go on the environmental working group's website and see the rating for individual products you may be using, and learn what the concerning chemicals are.  The concern is that cosmetic products are not regulated by the FDA, so companies can put whatever they want in them.  If you go to Whole Foods (the 365 line is very cheap) or even Target - there is a natural beauty section with a variety of products to choose from that don't contain harsh chemicals.

This is incorrect. All of the major cosmetic companies have a toxicology and regulatory department that tests the chemicals. At the end of the day, the tox depts choose about 1/10000 of what is acceptable to put in the cosmetic. This translates to little effects when you consider it is a topical application. I'd be more concerned about fruits with pesticides and meats with antibiotics since you're actually ingesting those. EWG goes off of the ingredients list on the products and whether those ingredients can be harmful. They do not take the concentration of any specific ingredient into consideration. With that said, I wouldn't read EWG blindly...it's just giving you a list of the ingredients.
So while not FDA regulated, cosmetic companies do try to cover themselves by having clinical and toxicology tests done, so as to always have a good brand image and to prevent lawsuits. It would be pretty dumb to just throw a bunch of ingredients together and start selling it without knowing the combinatorial effects of such a product. While smaller companies do this, big companies don't.

  • Try Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap. They have a lot of natural shampoos & body products. I barely wore makeup during or after my pregnancies. I usually wait until I'm about 6 weeks postpartum because that's when I actually start getting out again & feeling good enough to want to look the part too lol. But I understand what you're saying. My sister always told me that whatever I put on my scalp it will be absorbed throughout my body. So I did stay away from certain things. I just ended up using natural shampoos & oils, even though we we're already using them lol. But I just stuck with those. & as far as makeup, I think the only thing I wore was mascara & lip balm. It was Burt's bees lip balm & Revlon mascara. I didn't have it in me to do anything else. & my face was so fat it always ended up looking like a large dinner plate regardless lmao.
  • I haven't changed shampoo/conditioner (usually, Organix or my husband's 2-in-1 to save time), face wash or moisturizer (Neutrogena). The only thing I stopped using was benzoyl peroxide lotion for breakouts, and instead bought some tea tree oil products from The Body Shop.

@cm_712, I've tried a lot of the honest company's products and I really like them. No reactions here.
