March 2014 Moms

C-Section mommas! Exercise after section.

When did you start working out? I mean REALLY working out...working out hard.

I'm not even 8 weeks PP yet but I've been walking some. I want to get T25 for when I really feel like I can do a hard workout but don't want to get it now if I'm not going to feel like I can for months.

I know it's all individual but when did you start Reeeaaaalllyyyy working out after your section?

Re: C-Section mommas! Exercise after section.

  • Love to know this too! Friday I may finally get my incision stitched up which means no more wound packing!! So I'm thinking my CSection recovery clock starts then... So hopefully 6 weeks after that I can get active. I feel like a sloth

  • I'm working out now at 9 weeks pp and have been since 7 weeks pp. I'm not working out crazy hard, but I'm jogging and doing squats, lunges and abs. I just had my first post-cesarean physical therapy appointment today and was given a series of exercises to do to reengage my transverse abdominus. Interestingly, she told me not to do any crunch type exercises yet.
  • I started once I got cleared at my 6 week apt last week. It was nice to start the classes at the gym that I went to before. I also am doing workout videos at home.
  • I started walking and yoga at two weeks pp and am now back to running and lifting weights at 8 weeks pp. I'm trying to add Pilates, but I'm still having a hell of a time isolating my abs. Today was the first day I really felt like I was "feeling" them like I did before BFP.
  • Honestly, if the twins didn't take up so much of my time, I probably would have started as soon as my ob cleared me at 6 weeks (my recovery was great despite a vaginal birth and a CS). I was in my best shape just before getting pregnant. I've been apprehensive about getting to workout much even if I had time, because I don't want my milk supply to tank
  • I just got cleared yesterday! I am starting tomorrow.

I'm almost 13 weeks and I started running/jogging about 3 weeks ago. Trying to find time has really been my biggest issue. My incision area hasn't been bothering me much but I haven't been pushing it as I had just finished PT for a bad SI joint right as I got my BFP and hadn't worked out in over a year.

  • @Jt7dreamz‌ - I'm not sure why no crunches. I think it has to do with the layer of abdominal muscle she wants to target first. I'm going to ask more questions next week.

Haven't started yet but I'd love too. My incision is fine and there's little pain- I overdid it yesterday lifting things but nothing other than that. My abs are terrible now:(

What's the deal with exercise and milk supply tanking? Is it because you just go through so much water when working out? I might take in a Zumba class tomorrow so we'll see. I'll just make sure to pump tomorrow morning and mayhaps before I go depending on timing. An drink soooooooo much water .
  • Yeah, that's another thing I'm worried about is my supply taking a dump. I'm finally in a good place mentally with BF and want to keep going.

My incision isn't fully healed yet so I'll stick to walking for a few more weeks and see how I feel later before doing anything too strenuous.

  • I've been doing some walking since 3 weeks PP, but I'm holding off on anything more intense until I feel like my incision has fully healed. I want to start with easy pilates moves so I can get back some core strength then maybe move on to swimming.

Speaking of healing, @somersisles just a heads up - at my OB appointment this week I was given the OK to quit packing but she also coated the wounds with silver nitrate to prevent infection. Yowza that stung!

I've been jogging and swimming 4 times a week for about 3 weeks.  I'm not going all out though because I'm worried about milk supply.  I figure there's lots of time for that later.

That, and, I tend to lose more weight by eating healthy than I do by working out.

  • @kaking78‌ for some reason I don't recall anyone else dealing with CSection wound packing! I'm glad I'm not alone in this ordeal! (Although I'd rather no one be dealing with this!)

What happened with your wound? How long have you been dealing with the packing?

My incision became infected about a week after delivery and they had to reopen the entire wound and they discovered an infected tunnel 8 deep! Nursed have been packing my wound daily for nearly 6 weeks!

Did you not have the option of getting the wound stitched up at the very end?
  • @somersisles I know what you mean - it's miserable, but I'm glad I'm not alone.

About 10 days after the c-section I had two wounds open up, one on the right end and one dead center. I had to pack both of them - well, my husband did. The triage doctor was also worried about it being MRSA infected so I had to take a course of clindamycin. The smaller one was too closed to pack about 4 weeks post c-section and the larger one did the same about a week later. Since they were closing on their own I guess that'd why I didn't need new stitches.

This past Monday at my 6 week PP checkup they looked a little irritated so I got the silver nitrate treatment to chemically cauterize them and help them heal cleanly. The skin is still open but it's slowly closing. I'm also putting a layer of Monistat on them twice a day to combat a surface yeast infection.

And people wonder why I wanted a med free vaginal birth.

  • I'm almost 10 weeks pp, and I'd be working out hard if I had time. I felt fine since about 7-8 weeks. But with 2 little girls and MH working long hours, there just is no time. So it's mostly long walks with the stroller.

I started right when I was cleared at 6 weeks. I've been doing t25 for a few weeks now. I don't follow the suggested schedule because I do other things too. One of the girls in the video offers alternatives for the movements. It's still hard so if I can't finish all the reps I just stop and wait for the next move then pick it back up. I started crunches right when I was cleared too.

I don't know why no crunches! I'm 11 weeks pp been working out since. 8 weeks. I do 3 sets of 50 crunches a day. I feel fine. I also do push ups and jog.
