Refusing bottle

I'm mostly nursing my 7 week old dd. I've tried several brands of bottles and had success with playtex. She would get a bottle on occasion and sucked it with no problem. Recently she had wanted nothing to do with them! She gets so angry and screams until she gets the breast. I'm going back to work in 2 weeks so she will have to suck a bottle. Anyone ever been in this situation? How long did it take for your lo to accept a bottle?

Re: Refusing bottle

  • Have you tried having someone other than you give her a bottle? My LO will sometimes refuse one from me bc she associates me/my smell with the boob and wants that over the bottle. But if DH does, she takes it like a champ.

  • This happened to me, Lucas did great for 2 weeks and then refused, I have not tried doing another bottle, the avent worked but it would just flow down too fast. The Medela calma worked but baby has to work for the milk. I just bought the lansinoh momma bottle but we have yet to try.

People tell me, eventually he'll be hungry enough to take the bottle, advise I don't particularly love, but I feel it might the case for us.

  • LO had to be in just the right mood before she'll take a bottle. Not too hungry, but hungry enough. She did much better with DH when I left the house. She must've known her options were limited. She was taking the bottle well (for her) when I got home and when she heard my voice immediately stopped. Like PP's have said try having someone else give it and leave the room/house.

One of the twins takes a bottle and the other did when we started offering them (around 3 weeks) but now she will very rarely take one. We've tried a couple of different bottles and played with formula vs BM and different temps, but so far there's no apparent rhyme or reason to when she'll take one. I really think she's just a mama's girl because she puts up a fuss for just about anything other people try to do for her. I SAH so most times it isn't an issue but I need my breaks too. Luckily DH is a saint and is willing to give me time even knowing she may cry the whole time I'm gone.

Now that the babies are giving me a little more time between feedings I'm hoping to pump some and work on it. I've heard some have luck with nipples made out of different materials so I'll probably try that next.

  • Ugh, we are having this problem also! My poor H is getting quite frustrated. Things do go better when he gives a bottle while I am out of the house, but even then she sometimes really gives him trouble. Of course when Grandpa gave her a bottle she did great! What is that about? Stinker!

Sorry, no helpful advise but lots of sympathy since we are having the same struggle!
  • LO will not accept a bottle from me. I usually leave the room, if she knows I'm there or hears my voice she only wants boob. We've had the most luck with the playtex bottles and warmer milk/formula.

DD would only take the drop ins with the latex nipples.

  • Now that I think about it, two out of the last three times she refused I was in the house. She wouldn't let dad give it to her while I tried to nap, the other time a fam member tried to feed her while I ate. But when I left her to go to my doc appt she took the bottle easily and fell asleep! I guess I can't be around her for bottle feeding. How picky lol!
