Teething?!?

I've had four children. I recognize the absurdity of this question, or rather the high probability that my 7 week old isn't teething, BUT I have no other explanation as to his behavior. He's had incredibly loose stools, water-like (ebf, but it's not usually this watery), screaming screaming screaming; typically he's an amazingly calm little guy. He's been drooling, and jamming his fists in his mouth. He's grunting must of the night, and sometimes the breast won't even console him. He tries to gnaw on my fingers and then becomes extremely angry and screams. This isn't a tummy thing, I'm almost certain. It just seems incredibly early for teething. So all that rambling I guess can be summed up by asking, has anyone ever experienced early teethers, or heard of it?

  • My friend's baby had a tooth at 2.5 months! There have actually been cases of babies born with teeth! Now, that would be crazy!

Aren't there rare cases of babies born with there baby teeth even? I could have made that up, but I'm pretty sure I heard that somewhere. Although I know hand sucking is (from what I read) a typical milestone for 6+ weeks. Please let us know if it is teething this early!

  • I'm not dismissing the teething but I also think it's worth looking into dairy intolerance and/or silent reflux. My DS chewed on fingers and his own hands and wrists, grunted all the time while sleeping and obviously screamed due to hi silent reflux. Intolerances can cause watery stools and the crying at the breast. Just other thoughts.

@pete0121‌, he does have silent reflux, so maybe it's possible that it is getting worse? I don't consume dairy, and avoid soy, and I don't eat gluten, but maybe he's still not happy with something I'm eating. Thank you for the insight! :-)

I remember seeing them talk about this on Baby Mama.

  • My older adopted sister was born with a true tooth, it's really rare. My GF's son got his first tooth at a month. DD1 got her first tooth at 3 months after months of teething symptoms and had a complete set of teeth at a year. So ya baby could totally be teething, but he could have these symptoms for weeks or months without sprouting a tooth.
  • My older brother had his first tooth at 2 months also.

I've gleaned from this experience this little gem; never ever take a quiet baby for granted.

  • DD had two teeth at 8 weeks.
  • I was going to say reflux too. My baby has a lot of those same symptoms when his reflux meds are wearing off.
  • Is he taking meds for the reflux? I would say that it'sist likely the issue. However, I don't know that it explains the stools.

He isn't taking meds for reflux, his doctor wanted me to watch for signs of pain when he spit up. I'll talk to her. Thanks for your input, ladies. I appreciate it!

  • Wow my DD has been doing the same thing and I keep telling everyone no no no but I think after seeing this I may be wrong.
  • Ds1 started teething at 2months.
