DS's EI Eval was yesterday

So DS had his EI eval yesterday, and it went well! The 3 therapists that came out to do it were incredible and DS had so much fun with them. He was such a little ham, it was really fun to watch him interact with them. Its amazing how much info they can actually gain by playing with my kid for an hour.

Although he does have an expressive speech delay (which they mentioned could be a result of his constant sinus congestion/ear fluid issues for the past 4 months in which we're following up with an ENT about), his receptive language is beautiful for his age. Also, his social/emotional, cognitive/adaptive skills, as well as his fine and gross motor were all perfect for his age...with his fine motor being "pretty darn impressive for his age" according to one of the specialists (which made me such a proud mama to hear that!).

All in all I'm pleased with the results. He qualified for 2x a month "speech" play therapy. The woman explained that at his age (16mo) he's still on the young side for direct speech therapy, so they start out with a "play based" therapy and a lot of "coaching" for me on different activities to do with him in order to bring out more language, and then they'll more than likely re-evaluate in a few months.

This brings a lot of relief to me now that this eval is done and over with! :)

  • Good! Your DS sounds a lot like my DS1 at that age. My guy ended up being diagnosed with apraxia at 2.5 because he never had a language explosion. Now after 8 months of speech therapy he's a non stop talker with us!

16 months is lots of time to have his explosion of language though and I'm sure the play speech therapy will help loads! (FWIW, our therapy at 3 is still played based but is one on one).

The same thing happened to my brother who eventually had to get tubes. I know the surgery would be nerve wracking but it would really make a difference for him. Especially of you do it early. My brothers weren't done until he was closer to 3 and he would always say "what?" after everything because he couldn't hear well.

Let us know how the ENT consult goes! Btw did you have more betas done?

    Eta posted too soon

  • @ShakeyJakey‌ Yeah, MH needed tubes as well as his adenoids removed as a kid, so we were wondering if DS would inherit those issues as well. I guess we'll see when we go to see the ENT on Monday.

@ShakeyJakey‌ to answer your question, yes I was supposed to have a 3rd done today at a different lab (the lab at my dr office is closed on weekends), but apparently the lab never received my slip...which I was irrationally annoyed about! So I'm just gonna go in to the lab at my dr's office on Monday. I'll keep you posted :)
