Trouble TTC

Thyroid question

Hi I have an under active thyroid and just did blood work came about 6.2 something and we increased my dosage and do more blood in few weeks..anyway my question is what does the thyroid influence when trying to concieve..like does it not allow you to ovulate? I do OPK every month and I have smileys (the lh surge) every month around the same time..thanks it's something I forgot to ask my ob..

Re: Thyroid question

  • Because my mom has hypothyroid (been on Synthroid for decades), although I have not tested with any thyroid problems, I wanted to look into the possible effects.

Like PP said, anovulation and long cycles can be an issue. Also I don't remember how all the hormones interact (probably because I still don't have a very clear understanding of how fertility hormones exactly work), but I remember that it can cause poorly matured eggs - they might ovulate, but not be of good quality.

Treating thyroid can make a big difference in fertility though! Good luck. :)

    Good luck smiley!

I was recently diagnosed as having hypothyroid as well.     Being hypo can affect fertility and carrying a pregnancy in a number of ways.... but the good news is it is easily treated and monitored.  :)     The meds aren't super expensive, and are typically tolerated pretty well.    Its probably a very complicated issue on a hormone level, but it seems to be amoung the easier of the "fixes".

I hope this helps set your mind at ease!

  • The surge doesn't mean your necessarily ovulating. Hypo can affect your cycle quite a bit. I was told I may have it too. Best of luck to both of us :)
