Parenting Class

We decided to sign up for a childbirth preparation class. I was really surprised how long it is. Four sessions over four weeks, and three hours each session. Twelve hours! @-) it does say that they cover life skills, effective breathing, massage, positioning, stress and coping skills, and newborn care. I'm feeling very overwhelmed!

If you signed up for a class, how long was it for? Does it cover everything, or just specific topics?

The one we did with DS was 6 weeks. I can't remember how long each class was, I think 2 hours each. It covered stages of labor, delivery, pain management, hospital tour, and some basic newborn stuff.

  • We signed up for the 1 day express class starting at 10 am and ending around 430. It covers labor and delivery...not sure what else. We signed DS up for a sibling class. That'll teach him diaper changes and basic newborn care for DS

  • Ours is three classes, three hours each. I'm just worried about staying up until 9:30pm on a weekday.

  • Due it scheduling conflicts and availability of open spots we registered for an intensive 2 day course in one weekend. The local hospital by us has options for 2 day through 6 week courses, all total 12 hours.

  • I signed up for the childbirth express class, just a one day 3 hour class that covers L&D and pain management

  • Ours is a specialty twin class that takes place on a Saturday and Sunday for 4 hours each day. I have a friend who had her twins in Feb. and she took the same class and said it was really helpful. It isn't for a few more weeks so I'm not sure how comfortable I'll be sitting in a classroom for that long. We'll see!

  • I'm taking a childbirth prep class from my ob-gyn/mid-wife office that is about six hours long on a Saturday.  I've already taken a breastfeeding class at my university - 1 hour each, for a total of 3 hours.  We're also taking an infant care and safety class that is about three hours on a weeknight.  My mother in law got me a pack of prenatal yoga classes, and apparently the instructor teaches a class about techniques to get through labor so we'll be doing that on a Saturday for a few hours.  I guess that's quite a few hours when you add everything together!

  • I took a 2 hour baby basics class that was free through a local pediatrician group. It covered the baby side of doctors in the hospital, what their doctor schedule would be when they came home, what was "normal" and what isn't so we would know when to call the doctor, and general stuff about the first year of baby's life. I am taking a one day, 3 hour baby care class in a month. It will cover the how to care for a newborn stuff like feeding schedule, diaper changes, how to take a rectal temp, etc. I generally know how to do these things, but it has been a while. DH will be out of town for that one, so my mom is going with me. She is watching LO when I go back to work and she feels that a refresher would be good for her too.

We are signed up for our hospital tour, but we can't seem to make one of the L&D classes work. We are down to an online option because DH has 5 business trips in the next 2 months and it is making it impossible for him to attend any other way. I am looking into a breast feeding class and an infant and child CPR class as well. My mom will do the CPR one with me.

  • Mine is also 12 hours over 6 weeks. We'll also be taking an evening breast feeding class and a one day burthing class through our midwife group. Sounds like 12 hours is pretty average! I'm not into reading about birth techniques so the way I see it, the more classes I attend the more prepared I'll feel without having to do much extra work at home.
  • Ours is 3 2-hour classes on Thursday nights. It's offered in one day, too, but I thought by the end if the day our brains would be totally fried. It's supposed to cover labor, hospital stay etc. there's a desperate one time class offered on basic newborn care, which we'll probably take too considering both of us are totally clueless!

  • Ours will be 4 weeks (2 hours a week). Description says it covers 'pregnancy, labor and birth, as well as relaxation and breathing techniques.'
