stressing about meds :(

I have had to take so many so far and I'm only 13 + 3 right now.  I know it's always a risk benefit situation, and like if I had a fever, I needed the tylenol, etc... but I cannot help but worry about the combination of ALL of them.  Has anyone taken a lot of different things in first tri/early second and had things be okay... I feel so god awful whenever I swallow a pill.  So far I've had to take:

around 7 weeks for bronchitis/severe asthma (risk was fever, not being able to breathe):
  • Azithromycin
  • Tylenol (only 3 doses)
  • emergency Duo-Neb treatment in the ED (albuterol and atrovent)
  • albuterol rescue inhaler 5x

and then... also 7 weeks for herpes outbreak on thigh (not treating is worse than treating per doctor)
  • Valocyclovir (not primary infection thank god)

and most recently at 13 weeks for Bacterial Vaginosis (Dr says med is safe in 2nd tri, and infection is worse than the meds)
  • Flagyl (Dr has ok'd stopping at 5 days instead of 7, due to horrible stomach issues from the meds, but I'm going to finish it out so I dont have to go on another course)
Really sorry if this is a stupid post, worrying about "nothing" ... but I'm worried about the cumulative effects. Thanks in advance...

  • I haven't had to take that many medications, just a handful of things for a very bad sinus infection and then a very bad upper respiratory infection a few weeks later. Doctors are normally very good about making sure the things they are giving you are either safe for pregnancy, or pose so low a risk that it's worth it. You have to keep yourself healthy in order to keep baby healthy too!I know my doctor knows best, but whenever she gave me a different medication to try while I was sick I always asked "This is okay to take while pregnant, right?" and she always explained everything very thoroughly to me so I was comfortable. If you're concerned, I would just schedule a time to chat with your doctor and review your health plan.

  • I took a lot of meds when I was battling tonsilitis, but my doc gave me a list on my first visit of things that were safe to take for certain symptoms. At first I thought my tonsilitis was just a cold, so I ended up taking Tylenol Cold & Flu (the blue stuff) for my sore throat and fever and later Robitussin for the cough that came up. Then I went to the doc and they put me on penicillin, but also a prescription cough syrup that tasted like ass for the cough I had because it was so incredibly violent and regular Robitussin was not helping. I think I took a Tylenol for the aching and fever, but it didn't help at all, so I just quit. My little guy checked out fine at my 20 week scan, so I'm assuming everything is fine. He's an active little bean!

  • thanks everyone... @nlcb13 my OB says it's all fine, but I kind of feel like he wouldn't tell me to worry about it even if it wasn't ok. Not sure... just wanted some additional input from here.

If that's how he practices medicine he risks losing his license and a huge malpractice lawsuit.  If you truly believe he would lie to you it is time to find a new OB.

And, ack, I had to read the double negatives three times.

  • Just think of that show, I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant, those women have no prenatal care and perfectly healthy babies. Nothing to gain from worrying now.
  • I'm not going to go into the list of medications I have taken but there have been a decent amount that have come up. Your doctor wouldn't prescribe them if it were a concern and only a minimal amount if any actually gets to the baby, it's not like they are getting the full dose we are.

And the poster above makes a good point, the women on I Didn't Know I was Pregnant usually have healthy babies even though they didn't have any prenatal care.
  • thanks everyone, yes good point about it not being as much going to the baby. For some reason, with the last course of antibiotics, I felt more worried than before. Probably because they ripped apart my stomach, tasted awful, and made me feel like I had the flu - I didn't want to imagine baby feeling ANY of that.  And that's true too about the women on I Didn't Know I was Pregnant... ok, starting to calm down a bit. Thanks ladies.

  • I had to be on 5 different medications for an ear infection alone (truly the ear infection from hell) - plus 3 different meds for nausea - plus some other issues along the way. I've never taken so many meds in my life! I'm a pharmacist and I've somewhat been able to pick out my own meds. The urgent care doctor was so afraid to prescribe *anything* for my ear infection that I finally just blurted out "I'm a pharmacist, 500mg amoxicillin TID for 10 days is totally safe and should do the trick!" and he said ok and wrote what I said.

Honestly, if anything most doctors are overly cautious/nervous about giving pregnant women meds, they don't just prescribe them willy-nilly. There's really no need to worry about "cumulative' effects- the way Tylenol works on your body is totalllllly different from how albuterol works, which is totally different from how azithromycin works, etc. And like your doctor  said, the risk of not treating outweighed the risk of treating, by far, in your situation. Your baby needs you able to breathe, without a raging viral or bacterial infection.

  • thank you for the responses ladies! I feel better now that the antibiotics are done.  Thanks @redaero for assuring me the baby doesnt feel the crap I was feeling... and you're right @spinsemeyer the baby definitely needs to breathe, and not have bacteria around his or her environment.  Thanks again :)
