Fitness Help

Guys, I need HELP!!!

I have read so many articles on nutrition and exercise and what is the best diet and workout for you and they are ALL DIFFERENT. I get so confused about what is the healthiest thing to do that I do nothing. Has anyone else encountered this? How do you know what is the healthiest?

I am also lacking some serious motivation to get healthy. I find myself just not caring enough, but I WANT to care.

I am exhausted all the time and MH just gets irritated when I try to be healthier because it just makes things difficult for all of us (the extra time involved, and having to eat different meals and making them, all the money spent on produce that spoils, expensive organic food, etc.) I don't even know what I should eat let alone how I can make meals in the first place. Paleo? Vegan? Gluten-free? Low calorie? What if I'm breastfeeding?

I just feel so lost and stupid right now. What can I do? Plz and thx

Re: Fitness Help

  • Instead of going on a "diet" try to make it a lifestyle change. Even little things will make a big difference. Start buying whole wheat bread, brown rice instead of white, have oatmeal instead of cereal, drink water instead of juice or soda. Eat 6 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones. If you eat fast food try to limit that to once or twice a week.

Picking just a few of those things to change will make a difference. You just have to stick with it!
You can so it :) Good luck!

  • Good old fashioned diet and exercise. And by diet, I just mean cutting calories and focusing on healthy food choices. Personally I stay away from the fad diets. I would find a website/app that you like for counting calories (my fitness pal, spark people, etc). Set up a weight loss goal, and they will tell you how many calories you can eat to get there. I would just add a bunch on top of that for BFing. Exercise doesn't have to mean hitting the gym 7x a week. Perhaps try 30 mins, 3x a week. Take LO for a walk, etc. I think deep down we all know what kind of choices we should be making....don't turn it into rocket science. :) Slow and steady wins the race with weight loss. GL!

Agree with pp. and if you really want to make a permanent change don't follow any fad diets. I wouldn't recommend anyone go vegan (unless they truly believe in it), gluten free (unless you have celiac) etc... As for breastfeeding you need about 500 extra cals per day. Your body will tell you if you aren't getting enough. Don't make any food off limits because there really is no such thing as a bad food. And you'll help prevent binges. As for exercise, pick something you'll stick with and enjoy. Not something you hate because it'll be work. You want it to be fun. :)

Cals need to be tailored to you. Weight and activity level as well as age. Diets aren't one size fits all. :) if you need any help figuring that stuff out, let me know :) (I'm training to become a dietician)

I've had personal success with both weight watchers and the paleo diet. They are very different though. I lost 15 lbs over a decade ago with weight watchers and never gained it back. The program taught me to make vegetables the focus of my meals and how to keep a healthy balance between good food and occasional treats or alcohol. The upside of WW is no foods are off limits. So if you budget for it, you can have ice cream. It taught me also to save my treats for things I love - wine, chocolate, ice cream, and to not waste them on things I don't like chips or candy. Many friends have had success on WW as well. The downside is the hunger. I was always hungry I currently follow a paleo diet and have for about 2.5 years. My weight is roughly the same but I'm much more muscular and I'm never hungry. I eat very well despite eliminating so many foods. Upside-no hunger. Downside - fewer food choices. You can't have grains, beans, sugar or much dairy. Chocolate in moderation is fine.
