I was looking into getting some for the top of our stairs, and someone mentioned that it is actually more dangerous to have them at the top of the stairs. I haven't decided what I want to do yet. Need to talk with DH on this one, what are your thoughts fellow bumpies?
We got this one at our baby shower...we haven't installed it yet but seems very sturdy and tall, we do need it for the top of the stairs and it came with hardware so hopefully it secures into the wall...we live in a condo and the living space is on the second floor, so it's a must...if it doesn't work once we try installing it we'll use it for the kitchen and get a different gate for the stairs...I'm not looking forward to baby proofing!!!
@Snowboarderbritt I have one like that at the top of my stairs and I really like it, easy to use. I have a door at the bottom of my stairs so I'll be using that instead of another gate.
We have a Safety 1st Deluxe Wood Stair gate installed off the living room right now and so far I am really liking it. It is nice and sturdy. Some houses have no choice but to install them at the top of stairs. My four story house has a serious stairwell and it has to be blocked off.
A friend told me that going up has to be blocked off too but my house would be all gates if I did that, so I am just going with blocking the downward path on all floors.
Tension gates are a no no for stairs. We are moving Into a split level and the way the stairs are set up, at least one gate has to go on top. I plan on doing a lot of stair practice with dd- I hate gates and want them down the second she can navigate them.
My girls are getting locked in their playroom when they start moving! I'm getting mini panic attacks thinking about keeping track of 2 toddlers and all the baby proofing we have to do!
@TaterTat3 that's a nice one! I like it a lot! Can you buy it at BRU?
I def need gates for the tops of the stairs and probably one for the bottom! If I don't put anything there I'm pretty sure she'll hurt herself.. This is hard!
We are thinking of "making" a few of our required gates by cutting a normal door in half and mounting the bottom portion as you would a normal full size door and just adding a latch.
ETA: there are tons of pictures of this on Pinterest, I just can't seem to copy one of the pictures this morning to share!!

Not sure about BRU but looks like they have it in Petco!! Lol
@carawasa I guess it depends on location of stairs/gate. My old house with dd was a split level so I needed to go through the gate with all my stuff. The house I live in now I wouldn't need to go through with all my stuff so it should work out.
@ellestaxx please tell my MIL I'm not fat. Thanks.
So, somebody made it sound like they were only doing top-of-stairs gates to prevent falls. (And yes, don't use tension-mounted gates on stairs.) You have to consider that as babies start crawling up stairs, they may not initially be able to get back down safely.

Did I miss a story?? Mil said you are fat? And she is still breathing??
Yep, on a regular basis. I don't really share it cause #itscultural anyway. I'm huuuuuuge for an Asian girl, so it's not just mil that points it out. My parents' friends do too.

Or, save your money and keep an eye on your kid.

Nah. I leave my kid alone and unattended and poison him with formula. (Bad morals). #sorryihadto #iwontsayanythingelse
you were doing SO good up until that last smart ass statement. if your mission is to be a total douche-bag, you have accomplished it.
We have this one (the steps to the basement are to the right). It's a munchkin brand. It was given to us so I don't know cost. The only concern is that it doesn't auto latch every time and it could be easy to trip over (gap at bottom) but otherwise it's good.
I need some help from the gate pros. This is our front staircase. There is no wall to attach a gate to, so how do I put one at the bottom? Are there gates that can attach to the spindles on both sides?

i don't know if there's a proper way, but my cousin has 2x4's zip tied to the spindles and they drill into the 2x4. it's at the bottom of the stairs, so it's safe enough...at the top of the stairs i don't know.
We had a baby proofer come in. He recommended a gate not at the top of the stairs but at the of the hall a few feet before the stairs. At the bottom he recommended a pull mesh gate.
