night feeding-eliminating a feed?

Hi! Hoping someone can give me some advice on our night feeding routine. My son is 13 weeks old and formula fed. He goes to sleep around 8 and wakes up at 1 and 4am and then again up for the day at 630am. This is pretty consistent. Although I noticed the 1am feed he eats about 6 oz which is the most he usually takes in a feeding and is rare actually. And then he wakes up again 4 and only takes 2 oz. wondering of I can consolidate these feelings to just one...I tried a dream feed last night at 11. He took 3 oz at 11 but then got up every 2 hours...maybe keep trying the dream feed? Getting ready to go back to work in 2 weeks and would love to get him down to 1 motn feed or none (wishful thinking). He's about 14 pounds if that helps. Thanks!!

Re: night feeding-eliminating a feed?

  • If between the two feedings he's taking in 8oz total, I'm not sure it's wise to try and combine that into one giant feeding. That's a huge amount for a 13wk baby at once, and it's very likely he'll not drink all that, spit up a ton, and/or have an upset tummy from being overfed and be more cranky.

I agree with PP that at this age you really need to listen to baby's needs and deal with the extra wake-ups for now.  Can your H take one and you take the other to get you a longer stretch of sleep?

  • Yes listen to the baby but also do what you think he needs. If he's only drinking 2 oz at 4 it's probably more of a comfort thing. You can try to rock him back to sleep or if he takes a pacifier try that. At his age and weight he would be fine. My LO is 12 weeks and 13 pounds and her dr told me to start cutting out her 1 feeding a night. She will make up for it during the day. It might be a few nights of transition though... Good luck
  • I'm sharing what my Pedi advised me. I have been able to successfully drop one feeding but its not really a drop per say but I have managed to prolong his second nap to 3 hours from 2 and hours. So I think you could extend the time frame by trying this. I am not convinced it will work for every child but you could try however, if the baby wakes up hungry I feed him.

I think you should listen to your baby.  If he is waking up to eat, then he obviously needs the calories.  So I would be hesitant to try to eliminate any of those feeds.  But that's my parenting style, I go by his cues instead of setting a schedule.

I disagree with the highlighted sentence - lots of babies wake to eat because it's become a habit, or because they want comfort, but don't need the calories.  That said, I agree with your larger point - I'm not trying to eliminate any night feeds right now, because I figure that I don't know whether or not he needs to calories at this point, so I'll err on the side of feeding him whenever he wants.
