Family moving to Naperville/Aurora Area from NC. Need advice!

hey there! Obviously I'm quite new to this board because I currently live in Charlotte, NC with my husband and 9 month old son. I am expecting to be transfered to the Chicago area where I will have 2 base office locations - one in Downers Grove and one in the city (sorry, not sure of the exact location - Jefferson St. I believe?). My husband and I will be travelling up in 2 weeks to check out the area as well as potential housing options.  If you ladies could give me ANY information on recommendations of where to live/where not to live in the Naperville/Aurora area I would definitely appreciate it. It doesn't have to be specific subdivisions really, but if you have them that's helpful too. We plan to rent a 3+ bedroom home initially until we decide when/where we want to purchase. Baby will eventually be in daycare, husband will be job searching once we get there. Please advise on traffic to avoid, school systems, local attractions, really anything! Thank you ladies so much! Feeling very overwhelmed and anxious over here!

  • I grew up in Naperville school district 203 (Naperville North & Central High Schools). Very good schools. My niece and nephew are in elementary in that district after starting in Woodridge and noticed a huge difference. Highly recommend 203. It's a great town to live in with good access to Metra. Downers is a great area, as well (again, easy access to Metra). Feel free to PM with any questions . Welcome to Chicago!

Agreed with 203, and 204 is awesome, too. I live in Aurora just west of the Naperville border and we love it here.
  • I grew up in Naperville (my parents still live there)and I life in Montgomery(its right next to aurora). Your best bet is anywhere in Naperville. Great schools, and lots to do. there are some good parts of Aurora (mainly North Aurora) but the schools are not as good, though there are a few good private catholic schools you could consider if in the aurora area.

If you want to be close to the train I would recommend being closer to the north/central area of Naperville(train stations are off of Washington st near Ogden ave and one on 59.) though it can get a little congested with traffic during peek hours. If my husband and I could afford it we would move back to Naperville! good luck with house hunting :)

  • Thank you ladies very much for the feedback! I've been doing a little research online and will be travelling up there Wednesday to scout it out and meet some people with whom I may be working! Excited!
  • I agree with everyone else, you cannot really go wrong anywhere in Naperville. Aurora has good parts and bad parts as does Oswego and Plainfield (I live here, in the northern part and love it). We are doing private Catholic school in Naperville so it opened up the option of living a little outside of the Naperville (and gave us a much bigger lot). Naperville traffic is wicked though and if you are riding the metra look into parking permits as well. My DH was able to get a permit in RT 59 fairly quickly, but he has about 3 more years to wat on the downtown Naperville lot.

Ugh, went to edit post and lost it all
  • Route 59 always has horrible traffic! I would stay away from 59 if possible
  • This board doesn't have a ton of action, so not sure how many replies you will get. I grew up in Aurora, and just moved back to the area. We like it here. It all depends on what you're looking for--where you would choose to live. Are schools your main concern? Naperville/wheaton schools have more money and get better scores than Aurora schools, as far as I know. West Aurora schools have more than East Aurora schools. There are several private school options in Aurora, and a few in Naperville. There are parts of Aurora you probably want to stay away from, but for the most part those are obvious. As a side note, Aurora was recently ranked one of the safest cities for its size.
Heeeeeeey aren't you on feb 13? We live near each other! I am in Sugar Grove
