Who feels bad every time they hand over a pee sample?

*raises hand*

Good grief, it's ridiculous trying to catch your own urine in a container with a shot glass sized opening while 7 months pregnant... I felt ridiculous trying to maneuver around the belly to get a good angle and still was wiping off the sample jar. So gross. I always feel bad for the techs when I hand it over, even though it's in a ziplock bag.

  • I thought the same thing just this afternoon! Except in my doctors office it doesn't  come with a bag - yuck!

  • I always spend way more time wiping off the container and getting all the pee off everything (seriously, last time I peed all over my hand), than actually peeing in the cup.  Luckily, I just have to put it in that little cubbie in the wall and not hand it to anyone.

  • My doctor uses the little clear dixie cups too. I always feel bad because my pee is always neon yellow like I don't ever drink water. The damn elevation makes it impossible to stay hydrated.
  • My doctor switched from those plastic containers with the lids to what is almost like a little Dixie cup. Two appointments ago, I accidentally knocked over the cup and pee went all over the floor. It was lovely.

Mine has the Dixie cups too. So gross. Every once in a while they will have the jars with lids. That's less gross.

I'm so terrified of doing that! I don't usually feel bad since I wipe off the cup and I know the techs are required to wear gloves, but it probably doesn't bother me because I work in the medical field so bodily fluids don't freak me out too much.

  • I put it in a little window/cabinet and they receive it from the other side so I never have to physically hand it to them. The trying to pee in a cup isn't too bad for me but I also used OPK's for 1.5 years before having DD and then had to pee in a cup with her for 9 months and since that wasn't too long ago it isn't too hard. But I do kinda feel about it.

I can't pee n one stream. I pee n the cup, my hand, everywhere. It's horrible. At least no one is watching though. For army drug tests (at least once a year, but up to monthly) someone comes in and watches you. I get shy.. So I have to push out the pee like I'm taking a crap.. Otherwise I really can't go. I Pop blood vessels in my face and my chest, and I have pushed out poop in front of the observers. On many occasions. Yea.. Pooping during delivery is not a concern of mine lol.
  • My OB office gives you a plastic cup with a screw top at your intake appointment and expects you to reuse it for your urine sample at every visit. They rinse it out and give it back! I ordered a box of urine cups from Amazon because that's just disgusting. :-&

  • My doctors office also uses tiny dixie cups. There are the regular plastic cups with lids but there is a sign which says not to use those unless instructed to. It would sure be a lot easier but I imagine they are only for use if being sent off to the lab.

My name or initials is always labeled on the cup and as soon as you're done they go in and check it and dump it, but I always clean it off anyway because I'd otherwise feel bad leaving a cup full of and covered in urine. Yuck. You would think being a vet tech this wouldn't bother me so much but for some reason it does.

Oh, and one time I went in to the bathroom and there was still someone else's urine sample sitting there. Gross.

My doc has the little dixie cups too.

One visit, this pregnancy, I went in, labeled my cup, put it on the sink next to the toilet and then proceeded to pee.  I left the cup sitting on the sink.  No sample collected.

Talk about the joys of pregnancy brain.

  • I test my own urine at the midwives' office. Pee in cup, dip in a little protein/sugar test strip, wait one minute, and then let the midwives know my results. Much nicer than having to have someone else see my pee!

I am always really paranoid about doing this. It's worse on the days I have to bring my 2yo with me and I am saying, "Don't touch that cup!"

  • I take my pee with me to every appointment. They sent me home with a little pee container at the first appointment and a small gift bag to carry it around in. I would feel bad if I forgot it somewhere and someone got in it thinking it was a present :D

  • I've only handed over one so far to my mw! They just have me check a urine stick for glucose & protein before my appt & tell her the results.
But I get handed urine constantly at work, so I assume all the medical professionals are just as blasé about it as I am!

I don't have any problems with peeing in the cup and we have the little cupboard thing so it's not like I have to hand it to anyone.

A few years ago, I had to take a drug test for a summer job and it was my time of the month. I felt really embarrassed having to hand over a cup of red stuff to the lady performing the test....

I just had to do a 24 hour urine study (see FFFC), so I had to collect all of my pee for a whole day, dump it in this huge orange jug, and bring it back to my OBs office.  It was terrible.  I get up at least 5 times a night to pee, and I'm tired and its dark and I'm trying to pee in this cool whip container bc the opening to the jug is too small and I have the worst aim ever.  It was so gross.

Then I go to bring it back to my OB, and their lab closed early, so I brought it to the LabCorp, but they closed, too, so I had to bring it home, and PUT IT IN MY FRIDGE ( :-& ) and bring it in on Monday.  So now there is a jug of pee in my fridge.  I die every time I go in there.

  • I always feel bad too and I second what a lot of the PP have said about it getting harder since we're getting bigger. 7 months pregnant with twins at my last appointment and I literally sat there wondering how on earth I'm going to do this. I can't even imagine how much harder it's going to get at 8 and 9 months!

  • Oh, spilling the pee in the bathroom is a big fear of mine! At this office I use a regular size open paper cup, unless there's a urinary symptom or my first appt, then I carry it to the room and the tech has dipsticks there. Last office it was always in a sterile cup and put in a 2way hole/cubby in the bathroom wall

My office uses clear plastic disposable drinking cups. You leave them in a little cubbyhole with a silver door and they pick them up from the otherside. There were two(!!) other samples in there when i went today, i had move one over to make mine fit! Blech!

  • Wanna know a funny story?  My mom used to work as a receptionist at an OB office when I was little and she'd take us on the weekends sometime so that she could get some work caught up on.  We were usually pretty good at entertaining ourselves, but my favorite thing to do was to pee in a cup and leave it in one of those cupboards.  I'm now mortified to realize that they likely came in on Monday mornings to find a cup of old pee and I can't help but wonder if they were simply grossed out or if they were scared they screwed up by missing someone.  And I'm afraid to ask my mom if she knew I was doing it...

Otherwise, I think all that practice as a child peeing in a cup paid off. I've never worried about it other than the one time I was m/c, and that was for the same reason a PPer mentioned - redish pee in the cup.

I have to take mine in each time, too. It's the worst when my appointment is after work and they want me to use my first morning urine! My ob is close to work, not home. .. and it's not like I'm going to put it in the fridge at work, so I have to set up a cooler in the car.

I had to do two seperate 24 urine catches last pregnancy. They actually gave me a plastic seat to put over the toilet with a little funnel on one end to make it easier to pour into your jug. I pee A LOT, so I totally was that person strolling into the lab hauling a big jug of my own urine in each hand. Not going to lie, the techs acted slightly impressed with my pee output ;)
