Natural Birth

Anyone experience both a HB and a Birth Center delivery?

I've had 2 wonderful home births. Due to new insurance, we may be able to have our next birth completely covered (which save us around $4k) but it would have to take place at the birth center.

I'm having a heck of a time wrapping my mind around this - the driving during labor aspect, the being out of my bed, my bathroom, being able to recover in my own place without having to get dressed and drive home, etc.

Would anyone care to share if they've experienced both if they felt a huge difference? I also worry about stalling out once literally removed from my comfort zone.

Any anecdotes or stories are appreciated. I'm trying to decide if saving money is really worth going outside what I've loved and been so comfortable with.

Thanks!

  • Is it a free standing birth center or a hospital birth center?  I think that will effect things a lot.

I can't talk about how it is to deliver at a birth center.  My first was planned for a free standing birth center, but she got in a hurry and was born at home.  Afterward the birth center sent one of their midwives to us.

  • I could have written this post. I had an amazing homebirth with DD (that was covered by insurance) and this time, we live in a different state and have different insurance, and homebirth (and even birth center) is not covered, so I am looking at birthing in a hospital birth center with a midwife. I am so nervous about the whole thing, for many of the same reasons you listed. I'll be watching this post for other experiences.

I can't speak to having both.  We just had a free-standing birth center birth.  We stayed home until I was almost ready to give birth, luckily we were a 5-block drive.  It was the best of both worlds.  This time we are doing a homebirth.  Although the car ride was a tad uncomfortable during contractions and feeling his head descending, we can home about 5 hours later.  Neither drive was too bad and we didn't have any clean-up to do!  :-)
