WWYD? Neighbors suck!!

We have a neighbor whose son is 19. He comes home and leaves at all hours in the night. Well, he always has his stereo up ridiculously loud. I mean if I'm on the other side of the house, I can hear it. DH talked to the father which we have always been fine with but he moved out. The other morning the boy left at 5 and woke DH and myself up. H calmly asked the boy to turn down his stereo when it's really late at night and early in the am. Kid knows we have a baby! We told him during the day do whatever bc we can't expect him to work around DDs naps. Well he said okay no problem and didn't hear his stereo the rest of the day. He just left at 11 at night with his music deafening and just pulled back in with music cranked. What would you do? I mean he wakes up DD and we've asked nicely. I hate to call the cops over something dumb like this and we wouldn't want to start crap with neighbors,

Re: WWYD? Neighbors suck!!

  • Our neighbor does this as well, but he's a 50 year-old man. He just doesn't care. He's lived on the block the longest and he thinks he owns the neighborhood. There is no reasoning with him. I think if you have asked the parents and asked the son multiple times, you either have to take it to the next level or suck it up and deal with it.

Pretty much this. Personally, I'd have no problems calling the cops on his ass. I've done that to my neighbors. If you're not going to be respectful of people at night, then tough shit, you're getting the cops called on you.

I doubt it'll turn out like the movie neighbors ;)

It was bad. They were fine at the end, but it was bad during it. I doubt anyone would do that IRL though :)

  • I don't know where you live, but the cops probably won't do anything. Especially if it's just one kid, not a party, and it's just him coming and going. 19 year old boys just don't tend to think about others. Also, even if it's odd hours for you, 11 and 5 are not obscene hours to be coming and going.

  • Can you find out if there's an enforced noise ordinance in your neighborhood or town? Because that crap drives me batty and I would report it.

  • Where do you guys live that the cops would give a crap about this? Last week our neighbors had a party and it wasn't until the 3rd fight in the middle of the street and the 7th call form different houses that the cops showed up. On second thought, this is 99% of the reason we are moving...

This is kind of where I am at. Even IF the cops would care it becomes "HE said, She said" because by the time they get there the music will be off. Maybe the kid would stop after a talking to by the cops but it's not like he would likely ever be caught by them,

  • That's annoying but unless you have noise ordinances there isn't much you can do!

Do you have a Home Owner's Association?  If so, you could always send them an email or give them a call.  If not, I would find out about city/town nose ordinances like the others have said.  Our town has "quite hours" from 7 pm to 7 am.  I've called the cops on contractors working at 10 pm at night putting on a roof next to DD's room & that made them stop but they were caught in the act when the police showed up.

  • I wouldn't call the cops.  The cops can't do anything unless they actually catch him, and they're not going to sit on the street all night to catch him with the loud music.  Honestly I think you're just going to piss off your neighbor.  I would talk to him again after that suck it up.  I think that's part of living in a subdivision, just like an apartment, you have to deal with other people's lives.  Unless you have kids, you don't really think about things like that.

No advice, but you have my sympathies.  We have awful neighbors that don't really care about anyone but themselves and won't be changing any time soon.  They are about 65% of the reason we are planning to move sooner than expected.

  • I get we are out in the country, which means the houses aren't sitting on top of each other, but this is my point also. The houses are farther apart, which means it has to be super loud for us to hear it. Anyways, I'll have H talk to him again just 1 last time then leave it alone. (Or get even) ;)!
  • ugh.  That bites.  But I don't think you can really do much.

We live on a dark "scary" road kind of far apart and apparently it's fun to smoke up down the street from us so all night long are kids coming and going.  I'm usually woken up 2-3 times a night if our windows are open by loud music.  Basically it's just windows shut and sound machine on.
To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew
