Flying with LO

I know this has been discussed, but I didn't know we'd be flying then and now I can't find the threads...

We need to check a car seat, stroller, and pnp.  We are just going to gate-check the umbrella stroller and I have a bag for that, so that's not a big deal.  What's the best way to check the other two?  Is there something I should buy to put the car seat in? We don't have the box it came in any more.  I was going to bring the infant seat (not the expensive new convertible).  Should I try to bring the base too or should I just use the seatbelt in the rental car.  Is that as safe? For the pnp, can I just check it in the cloth bag that comes with it or do I need to buy something more substantial?  We were told that they would have all these things for us where we are going and now that fell through, so I'm kind of overwhelmed.  TIA

  • We recently flew with all 3 of those things, and here's what we did:

Pnp was packing into a larger rolling duffle bag. It had extra room, so we packed clothes around it just to reduce the number of bags we had. We checked the duffle.

We decided to just take our infant car seat (no base) and the stroller that it attaches too, even though that stroller is a little larger. We decided to gate check, and I'm glad that we did. 3 of 4 flights were not full, so we were able to go ahead and take our seat on the plane. We had not issues with gate checking the stroller, or even the car seat on the last flight. We didn't buy a special bag or anything, just folded everything up, tightened all of the straps, and removed all accessories. This is important - I saw another couple on our same flight who gate checked the same stroller, but they left toys, the tray, cup holders, etc all attached. Their tray did get broken.

We might have just been lucky, but traveling with those things wasn't as big of a deal as I feared. I was actually glad we had the stroller in the airport.
