Eczema on the scalp

DS has a really bad case of eczema on his scalp. He scratches at it in bed, and I think he keeps himself awake because of it. I've switched up shampoo (California baby and Mustela) and tried coconut oil. The pediatrician recommended that I put hydrocortisone on his scalp, which is easier said than done because he has a lot of hair. Most recently the ped suggested regular Head & Shoulders shampoo 2x a week, but there still isn't much improvement.

Any suggestions to keep LO from constantly clawing at his noggin?

I have used baby oil after bath and it has helped a lot!

  • I should have added that my very first attempt at a remedy was baby oil a couple of months ago.  Didn't help, and since he has a lot of hair, it took a bunch to actually get it down to his scalp.  I ended up with one very greasy, itchy baby!

He's also figured out how to remove hats (and mittens/socks on his hands).  Since he just recently had an ear infection, I'd be hesitant to put anything damp on his head while he slept.  And he wiggles enough in bed that they just fall off anyway.

We battled a dry scaly itchy scalp for months. My pedi recommended dandruff shampoo with coal tar. FYI it smells really gross. It helped clear it up but it never went completely with just the shampoo. I found that shampooing less helped. I rinse his hair but only use shampoo once a week and the dryness is gone. Good luck.
  • I think hats and scratch mittens are probably your best option. I have this exact same issue, and our little guy pulls them off too. I just keep putting them back on, and keep his nails trimmed. Perhaps try a humidifier when he sleeps?

I have had a lot of success with bagbalm; it locks in the moisture. But it will be super messy with all that hair. It works great, though.

  • Head and shoulders let it sit for a minute or 2 and scrub with a tooth brush- repeat.

What helps my eczema is sunlight. I don't know what the weather is like but maybe some light exposure (obviously not enough to burn) would help.

Also try some breast milk. DD had a rash last week and the ped said it was either eczema or contact dermatitis. I put breast milk on it for a few days and it completely cleared up.

What if you put your socks on his hands and up to his armpits and then put his pj's on? That way he can't pull them off.

  • That's why I love my Zippadee sleep sacks. They cover his hands! Otherwise he was pulling off the socks. Have you tried Cetaphil Restoraderm cream? It helped a lot for us!
  • Bagbalm.

If I had before/after pics I would show you. LO had the WORST eczema on his scalp and he scratched it to the point where it would weep and bleed. Bagbalm was the only thing that quelled the itching so he could sleep.

    And hats.
