My son also had an upper lip tie and a "tongue-tie." It made breastfeeding terrible! I didn't do it soon enough, honestly. My pedi was so lax about it and as a FTM, I was too. I spent two months in breastfeeding hell and finally made an appointment with an ENT and got his frenulum clipped. BEST decision of my life!!!
If you are having problems, I suggest you make an appointment to get it looked at. My son was nursing right after the appointment and was a happy baby. He didn't even act like anything happened. The clip was very fast, the worst part was the nurses holding him down.
Good luck!
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps... Mom to Carter (6), and Calianne (1). Proud VBAC, natural birth, breastfeeding, cloth diapering momma!
Thanks for the input! Yes I am having latch issues and I saw a LC today who suggested I see an ENT about clipping her frenlum. I think I will make an appt and at least hear what they have to say..... I just don't want to see her in pain
We dealt with tongue tie and an upper lip tie, and had both clipped. Definitely get it checked out immediately if there are issues with breastfeeding. Our pediatrician took a wait and see approach and it resulted in two months of complete hell and almost exclusive pumping. I had to really push for the referral. I'm still angry about it because it really helped.
Both of my kids had TT and have ULT. I have both, but was bottle fed and I wasn't really affected by it.
My daughter had a "normal" tongue tie and it was clipped at 3 days old. However, she was only partially BF for a few months before my supply dropped off. She still has the ULT and it is unclear whether that will prove to be a problem later for speech and dental health.
My son had a posterior tongue tie that was not diagnosed until he was almost a month old. It was found when he stopped gaining weight for almost 2 weeks. He had it lasered at one month, and his latch improved and he started gaining weight again. He is still EBF (and now starting solids) at almost 5.5 months. He also has a few other orofacial birth defects, we are being seen by a bunch of specialists for him. But the TT laser revision and stretches really seemed to improve his nursing.
I had upper lip and tongue tie, and had both clipped by a pediatric ENT, after recommendation from my LC at 1 week old. The pedi didn't check at all and was no help with the situation, just said to supplement with formula.
After the clip, breastfeeding improved tremendously!
As for the pain that you are concerned with, my LO cried for maybe 5 seconds max. After the clip, the pediatric ENT took a few seconds to put gauze in her mouth to stop the bleeding, then I positioned her in the cradle position and the ENT helped me to latch her and have her start nursing immediately. This stopped her crying and she didn't resume after she was done nursing.
No side effects of pain for the rest of the day, or any time after from the clip. Good luck with your decision.

Samesies! My dd wasn't diagnosed and I EP with her after she wouldn't transfer and lost lots of weight. Then she preferred bottle.
My DS is almost 12 weeks and had a TT and ULT corrected at 10 days. It helped significantly even though it took until week 5 before he really started transferring. Now we are rocking w BF!
I say do it. The procedure took 5 minutes and he was fully healed in about a week. He did scream pretty loud but calmed quickly. The ent used scissors and I've heard that a Laser procedure heals even faster.
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!
Had my son's posterior tongue tie clipped around 3 or 4 weeks old. It helped with breastfeeding. We were having lot of problems before the clipping and although it took some time, I'm still breastfeeding at 8 months. There is a group on Facebook that has a list of providers experienced with doing the procedures. You can see if there is anyone near you. Make sure to do the stretches afterwards.
The procedure was so fast I think I was more upset watching than my LO was with the clip.
