super stupid question, re breast duct clogging

So if I think I have a clogged duct that may not be unclogging and possibly giving me a light fever, who do I call? My obstetrician, general practitioner or DD's pediatrician?

Re: super stupid question, re breast duct clogging

  • I think your ob?

  • If your pedi has a lactation consultant on staff I would call there first, otherwise your Ob.

  • You should be able to call either your OB or your general doc.  And please call, sounds like you could be getting mastitis.

  • If your feeling ill your OB. Otherwise, is there a drop in centre in your community? Whether it's public health or LLL.
  • Definitely sounds like early stage mastitis. As much as it hurts, keep massaging that duct and try feeding a little more on that side than the other to work it out. It's pretty common to have in beginning weeks/month of breast feeding.

  • I learned in a breastfeeding class that you point the babies chin towards where the block is while feeding, Even if baby will be upside down. Sounds silly but the instructor said she has done it and it helps right away
  • I called my OB when this happened. I was able to just tell them my symptoms over the phone and they called in an antibiotic. I had mastitis - I got it twice in the first month of BFing. It can get really bad, really fast.

  • Call your OB. I just had this and they called in antiobotics. I felt much better the next day. I wouldn't wait too long on this. I went from feeling off to feeling awful.

  • I just asked my Ob this question when she was discharging me from the hospital today. She said to call her. I asked if I should call the lactation consultant first. She said that it's a good idea working with a lactation consultant to help with keeping up nursing through this, but that if you have mastitis they'll send you to the Ob, so call the Ob first

  • I called ob and family dr. Basically it was whomever called me back first. Make sure you take ibprophen or something to help with the fever. Mine got up to 104 before it went down. The nurse told me to put frozen cabbage on the clogged duct it's suppose to help get the infection out quicker. (I didn't try it)

  • After you call also check out Kellymom.com. Do a search for plugged duct and they have some good tips for getting rid of them. I've had two already and their advice really helped get rid of them quickly.
